I have an 8' work bench that seems to always collect 4' worth of **** on it. I've considered cutting to down to 4', but that would eliminate the only open space I have lol.
The fold up stuff seems ok for some people, but for me it seems wall space is at a premium for me. what extra space it takes to fold up is a loss of space IMO. I do try my best to keep mine clean, and have 1 shelf under the bench on then the floor as another "shelf". Like mentioned above, some things just dont have a home and end up on the bench. I am always looking/considering ways to better utilize my shop/garage space to take the most advantage of what room there is though.
The folder isn't my main bench, it was built specifically for metal work where it would tear up the top of my wood bench and throw sparks in a less controlled area. Hence I don't use it all the time, and if you look at 1:07 in the video below, you can see how tight it is with two vehicles in there...the wall is dead space anyway. Might be some other ideas in my garage tour video if you're tight on space.
