What's wrong with my warn

I have a m1200 on the front of my obs f250, I'd assume it from the 90s since it's on a classic warn bumper. The brake on it has never worked. If the motor isn't moving and it's under load it will un spool. Last time I used it 3 years ago the free spool stopped working. The motor will spool it no matter which position it is in, and I can't pull it out by hand. Also it just sounds broke. Sounds like something loose/grinding. What should I be looking for?

Pull the end cap off where the free spool lever is is find out whats going on.

If it is mounted backwards the brake won’t work properly.

ive had it apart before for fresh grease. I didnt touch the brake though. is that somthing that can go out?
