Today at my property this guy actually crawled into this pile of dead grass as my wife was setting it on fire. I pulled her back and we waited for the fire to get going. He came out, but not in good shape.

There were no rattles. My wife said it was a water moccasin. I thought it was short and fat.
They don't always rattle just because you're around. Could be, but usually when they get that big the markings aren't that clear. Short and fat checks out, but a lot of the venomous species in the South end up fat and short when they age.

I’ve never seen a water moccasin, but the shape of the head, and the camouflage tells me to be careful. And introduce it to my 590 :grinpimp:

Edit-

When I was stationed at Fort Carson we would use the near worthless mess kits to fry up rattlesnake. It wasn’t bad with a little garlic pepper. City boys would freak out :lmao:

Don't rely on it not having rattles, it could still be venomous.

The shape of the head is often but not always a clear sign its deadly.

Get a book on venomous snakes and learn.

Head and scales are very rattler ish.

Rattles do fall off so take a good look at the tip of the tail.
We have a lot of gopher snakes on the property. A couple years ago I went to reach for something under the back deck, then I noticed the snake. After taking a close look at the head, I got my .22.

It was too young to have rattles yet.

Snake shot works :grinpimp:

I came inches from stepping on this spicey fucker while hiking last year. Glanced down at my phone to look at the map and as I looked up, mid step my foot was heading right for him. Did some kind of weird Matrix shit in the air and managed to spin and land past him.

Were you screaming like a little bitch at a Justin Beiber concert?

Look at the pupils non venomous snakes and coral snakes have round pupils. Moccasins rattlers and copperheads have elliptical or cat eye pupils.
