What is a dog worth?

That sucks all the way around. Hard to be appalled with. They are a local issue to sort out. Adopting is a life decision, donating to shelters is a personal decision, taking them in short term hoping to find owners is a hard decision even if affordable.

Should a judge be able to order the old owners cover all costs to feed and shelter them? The blame here is fully on the owners and they did commit a crime by abandoning.

Depends on state law actually. Then if they would prosecute or not is a different story.

Some states, like Iowa, Pets are property. There are still humane laws, but at the end of the day you can do what you want with your property.

Other states, pets actually have rights.

probably agree with the OP, has to be a balance. Yes I've had a couple emergency bills after my first dog got hit by a car and in hind sight should have just put him down. But didn't know. On looking for a replacement I ran across alot of dogs that had no business being in a shelter. One was a large dog that the shelter said no man can walk by the fence it was kept in as it would try and kill you.:shaking:

I usually put my own animals down. It sucks, but you agree to take care of them to the end when you get them. In my opinion, it's better for the dog to be put down where they are comfortable rather than in a vet's office. That's just my opinion not a dick so don't take it real hard.

If the population needing care has grown beyond the ability to care for them, then they needed to be put down. I value my good dog over about any stranger on the street. My young heeler just went blind. I'm going to be giving her drops 3 times a day for the rest of her days. She's been right by me keeping me smiling through the shittiest part of my life. The drops only keep her from hurting, they don't restore or keep her sight. That's fine by me, she's worth it.
We have a local livestock vet that will come and do house calls for dogs. Had her put my last dog down here. Still sad but not the uncomfortable rider when they are in pain they in a strange sterilized environment. Nope out on the deck on his favorite bed as relax d as we could make him in his condition.

Ill throw rockbouncer money at my dog. Not literally, it would probably hurt her. But shes 4 and i have zero family so its really no stupider than wheeling from a financial perspective.
