Looking at buying this axle. He said it's a 70HD from a 97 Dodge 2500 with a 5 speed. I'm seeing mixed information that it could be a 70U, 70-3HD, or a 70/80 Hybrid.... guy says it has undercoating and doesn't want to scrap.it off.

I don't think the pinion casting is fat enough to be an 80.

D70u

The fastest way to id a d80 is the 4 small casting ears around the cover. The cover is taller also but the ears are the obvious

Ok. I'm worried it might be the 70-3HD but then it wouldn't be smooth bottom right?

Also what is this 70/80 hybrid that came in some 2nd gen 2500 dodge trucks? Could it be that?

Its not the first time ive heard of it but idk wtf it is. Ive done around 75 2nd gen diffs and theyve all been d70 but 2. And those were d80s.
D80 are 11.5" ring and a pinion shank about as big around as a soda can. D80 castings are completely different. D80 are 35 and 37spl.

D70 are 32spl and use conventional d70 gears.

I dont even think the diff carrier brgs are interchangable.

As far as i know, d70-3 are gmt400 and some vans and theyre a bastard ****. But theyre not in 2nd gen dodge trucks.

Finally got a picture of it 70-2U. Picked it up yesterday.
