Nah, she has helped me out where she can. Her work schedule has been opposite of mine most of the time. My son, on the other hand is a different story. I don't necessarily need him to help with this project. But he could be doing the shit I don't have time for while i'm wrapped up in this. The sad part is I'm going to have to chew his ass out to get him to understand that.

Did you not use a waterproofing membrane under the tile because of the block and metal studs? Just curious.

The red paint nope I had it didn’t use it I used fiber board not cement board the fiber cost more but doesn’t ever rot like cement board. Also ran the rubber pan almost 2 feet up the wall. With the 12x24 tile I have fewer grout gaps and I also used a filler between the cement boards honestly figure it will be good for 10 years the bathroom I ripped out was from the 80s and rotted out

Still working on this.

electrical is done. Originally had a light/fan combo and a lighted medicine cabinet. No other fixtures or outlets. Added 2 outlets on opposing wall. Added a box for a light over the vanity and 2 recessed lights over the tub.

flooring is done. This spring we put laminate plank flooring in the kitchen. The layout of the house makes for a nice uninterrupted run from the kitchen to the bathroom, so that’s what I did. No transitions at the 2 doorways.

plumbing is almost done. I dryfit all the copper today. I’ll sweat in the shot pods for the tub diverted tomp and work my way up. After that it’s the tub drain. Sink plumbing will be unchanged.

then it’s permanetly install the tub. Drywall/cement board. Paint & tile.


im really fucking tired of working on this. I’m trying to not be annoyed that I don’t have any help. It really chaps my ass when I spend 10 hours or more over the course of the weekend when whoever else is home is doing nothing. Combine that with the fact tha I barely know what I’m doing and my motivation is next to zero.

I had zero clue on what I was doing on the remodel I did I sort of just applied my outdoor construction experience to the thought process and asked lots of questions is it perfect nope but still better then some of the commercial jobs I’ve been third that are recent.

Basically what I have been doing. I have enough rough carpentry , plumbing and electrical experience to get through it. YouTube has been filling all sorts of blanks for the other stuff.

I keep forgetting that I need to put in a new door and frame before I hang the drywall on that wall.

Take the time and effort to run the membrane 2 ft up the wall but can’t take the time to waterproof and shed the water down past the membrane… and the waterproofing was on site?????
What magic filler did you use for the gaps in the “cement board” you said you didn’t use????

You could have literally spent 20-30 more minutes and your shower would last a hundred years rather than the ten, you’re hoping for!!!!!

I live in Florida cement board will root out down here nothing lasts down here and your 20 to 30 minutes is the time to apply it what about dry and cure time and second coating. Yea I was pretty much over the whole bathroom at that point. I was also doing it for the learning experience which means I was free labor.

Tell me this when was the last time you saw a shower tile fall off about the two foot mark almost never happens because most shower heads face down.

I used premixed Wall tile thin set because I didn’t want to mess up the ratio and I used a grout with sealer already mixed in and then applied another grout sealer over the entire surface so what difference would it make if I applied it before the mortar later it on the surface layer

The red membrane paint has only been a recent product application it’s not something that was used in the 80s or 90s

I’m pretty sure the cabinet and fixtures will rot out before my wall tile surface gets penetrated

And most people gut the kitchens and bathrooms when they become the new owners anyhow.

My acrylic resin tub and surround are starting to crack after about 10 years. Maybe i got a bad set, but would do a fiberglass 1piece or an iron tub and tile walls next time. Its too expensive to deal with right now so i put clear grip tape over the cracks in the tub for now

I used green rock in my tub and shower ceilings but not the walls. Green rock here is for moisture areas, there is no purple stuff here and no idea what dens is at all.

Reminds me of the guy on YouTube that does videos on terrible bathroom construction and he is contracted to come in and rip it all out and redo it all. It ends up costing the home owners more then double when it’s all done then if they did it right the first time.

We average at least 5-6 of these a year….. usually cause, house flippers!!!!!
Homeowner sees signs about 2-3 years in to their purchase…. “Hey, our hardwood is buckling in the hall behind our $10,00.00 shower”!!!!!

Insurance: “yuuuup… our magic moisture meter shows water in and up the wall….. sorry, we don’t cover that”!!!!!!!

Made some progress this weekend. Soldered up all the supply plumbing. Miraculously no leaks. Got the drain plumbing in also. I’ll leak check that down the road, Any leaks should be a matter of a loose fitting.

I’ll spend the next day or two doing a layout of the walls on paper. Mainly so I know where are the studs and whatnot are in the future,

then drywall starts to go in. I’ll be using the purple moisture resistant stuff and rolling on a waterproof membrane on the 3 walls around the tub. Tile over that & paint the rest. I had originally planned to use cement board around the tub, but I’m getting close to hitting my budgeted limit. Plus it’s going to be easier just to deal with the drywall.

I plan to hold the drywall 1/4” up off the floor just in case there are any issues in the future with water. The only thing that sucks is that my ceiling is about 8’ 1-3/4” off the floor so no matter what I’m going to have horizontal joints per wall…unless they sell the drywall in 5’ wide sheets.

Don’t let up now!!!! Cement board the shower… at least getting it 5 or 6ft off the tub!!!! You’ll use more waterproofing on the gypsum board, nullifying any savings!!!!
Take your scrap and rip what you can down, for your lower wall area in the rest of the room… try and get at least a foot up….. takes care of your 8’+ problem…. Use Sheetrock on the rest of the wall!!!!
“water resistant” is a waste of money…. Go water proof or go with basic Sheetrock…. If you’ve got a moisture problem, “water resistant”, just delays the damage!!!!

Just a few more dollars and a few more steps makes a shower, structurally 100X better!!!!

If this is a tub/shower… look to see how the tubs designed for weep holes…. Some have no design at all…. So you build a damn, behind the last tile going over the edge of the tub, with Wedi (or any knockoff brand) sealant!!!
I can explain any of this stuff in more detail if anyone wishes!!!!

What an opportune time for this thread to show up!

My toilet should of had a V8. One of the mounting bolts broke loose. I pulled the toilet and the flange is rusted off on one side but when i went to put in a flange repair ring there wasn't anything to bite onto.

I have the tools and basic repair concepts so well see how this goes. Ill probably add some gussets and triangulation just to say ive got a shitter with those things.

Im lucky the wifes out of town for a week so i dont have to listen to her bitch about me fumbling around trying to fix it.

I think its been half assed repaired before since I found nails and square drive screws in the osb.

Ill take any advice i can get.

Hd had a metal flange thats split into 2 pieces so you dont have to cut the flare off the end of the plastic. Do those work worth a damn?

They work but your flange should be above the subfloor and it looks like yours is below it. If its abs just cut/sleeve and reglue the flange.

Make sure you support your edges. You can use smaller screws that will bite the plywood, the weight of the toilet is on the floor not the bolts. Use the wax ring that is encased in rubber, that way you can pull the toilet as many times as you want if needed with no mess.

Let's say all of your exclamation points convinced a guy to do the cement board.

How does one deal with the transition from drywall to the cement board? does that seam get covered by the tile? does one use any sort of mud/tape on that seam?

I replaced my old cast iron flange with a PVC one similar to the second photo. The rest of the cast iron pipe is in good enough shape. I'm not fucking with it.

Man I'd say 90% of homeowner built showers are incorrect. No waterproofing membranes, usually the pan liner corners done wrong etc. Red Guard, Kerdi systems etc are the way to go. People don't understand and kind of hardibacker or concrete board is not waterproof, and in fact acts as a sponge. Even the OG showers back the day had plastic behind the backer board, or deck mud walls that overlapped the, (at the time, usually lead) liners. Anything with no waterproofing on the walls will have mildew and moisture behind the walls 100%.

Replacing with fiberglass tub. Planning on insulating the tub before I install it. I already know about supporting the base of the tub. Any tricks for the wall/surround?

Last house I did was green board behind a properly installed surround. It didn't leak, and that was 15 years ago.
