Weight Fees/Commercial Vehicles in California. Who knows about this shit?

So if I am reading this correctly, if my van has at least 4 of the features listed (it has all 6) it will be classified as a motorhome.

If it doesn't have at least 4, it will be classified as a camper van and pay weight fees.

Yes, fill out the 2 forms I described to pae above and head to the dmv

That doesn't surprise me, Gavin has gots to get his monies to waste.

Looked into it a bit, and it's not a trust but an LLC that you set up in Montana and the LLC owns the vehicle and because MT doesn't have sales tax and has low reg fees, so on a 6 digit purchase that can add up to a lot of money. In AZ, my 10 year old F150 is $108, and my 26 yo 4Runner is $53, but that includes personalized plates on both which bumps it up $25 IIRC. OH SHIT, I just realized my Toyota expired 4 days ago, whoops.

so how can they fine you reg fees if the vehicle is legally owned by another llc?

They can't. You pay Montana and drive around with MT tags. Insurance was always the question I couldn't get a clear answer on and has kept me from digging much further in to it.

Hello???
Nannyfornia?!
V.C. stated some bullshit about any vehicle in the state more than 30 days has to be registered with the kommies as I recall...
Also the 10 day registration requirements for transfer...

I have heard same. Some insurance companies will deny coverage if it's not registered where you live, but if the LLC owns it, then the LLC should pay for the insurance where it is registered.

I had three running vehicles when I lived in Vegas, a 1976 Porsche 911 with a 1986 Carrera 3.2 engine that ran cleaner without a cat, than the factory 2.7 did brand new, a 1985 Toyota pickup rockcrawler that had plates, but got maybe 100 miles a year on public roads, and the 2000 F250 7.3 that came from the factory with zero emissions equipment. The state of NV wanted me to smog test all three of these things yearly, and it was a pure money grab, so I registered them at my buddies house in Nye county, and never had any issues with insurance, (State Farm). That was over 15 years ago so maybe things have changed.

A friends daughter lives in Vegas but her car was registered and insured under her dads policy in CA. No issue until she got into a fender bender and somehow without her mentioning it the adjust found out she was employed under a contract in Vegas. They cancelled her car off the policy and damn near didn’t pay out on the claim.

So I would say always make sure the vehicle is insured properly.

for what reason exactly? if you are pulling a fiver TT, dont understand why they woud require to remove or lock out 5th? Or is it because it’s a tow vehicle at that point?
The semis plate is considered commercial use.
The ones I’ve converted have pickup style 5th wheel hitches to abide by the rules.

My autocars factory player is “locked out”. I installed large bolts that don’t allow it to move. They signed off on it.

"you can't tow with a hitch that's good for 80k all day every day, but if you bolt on a little twinky version of the same thing that's only rated for 16k on the occasional weekend of use then you're much safer"

They don’t want people registering their semi as an rv and then using it for hire and hauling semi loads.

Not my rules. I just have to abide by them to complete the conversions.

Fabricobble up one of these using a semi truck hitch.

Frankly, if a cop stops your schoolie abomination it's because they're looking for drugs. If you don't have any they probably will move on real quick rather than waste their time going through their field reference of infractions to find something they can bend to nail you with.

I would agree with you, unless you still have to drive said schoolie abomination through the scales. It those guys jobs to be assholes and find shit like that.

To update this........

Waited for 2.5 hours at the DMV WITH AN APPOINTMENT!

It was worth it though. Was able to get rid of the commercial tag and convert it to an automobile tag. She did not seem to care about the "life sustaining features" such as water, toilet, 110v, cooking availability, etc. She glanced inside but I am not sure if it was curiosity because the inside is a gazillion times nicer than the outside. It's ugly as fuck on the outside. Literally looks like a child molester rig. Maybe her glance was enough to see the convection oven, sink, outlets, etc. Not sure.

I had taken the plates off and took them in with me and they took those and gave me new ones with auto designations.

Registration went from 366 to 162. :smokin::smokin:

curious if this will make it easier to get insurance through a "normal" company like AAA, Geico, etc. None would touch it before.
