Never owned one. Thinking I should replace the coot with something a bit more modern.... I like the dump bed idea too.

Brands/models to look for? Not trying to sped a fuck ton also. Would highly prefer 4x4.

Kei Truck with SXS tires?

We've got an older 2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 4x4 for use around the land/farm and have been pleased with it. They can be found around here for pretty cheap just because they are so old and not sporty by today's standards, but still better than a comparably aged Ranger/Gator etc.
 
Lots. 4x4 with lockers, a dump bed and throw some UTV mud tires on it sounds pretty tempting. They are 6-10k ish
The problem with these is that parts are near impossible to source. You almost have to budget to buy two so one can be a parts vehicle.

That is my concern also... I have one obsolete thing I am thinking of replacing vs fixing that this point already....

When those things first started getting popular a few years ago several of my customers bought them for yard/lot maintenance trucks. Most are abandoned in corners of warehouses now. A large portion because of things most people would consider easy fixes, just unable to source parts to be repaired.
 
My old landlord has a Kawasaki Mule at his lake house. Most of his neighbors do too. They didn't change them for a long time. They're reasonably cheap and super common.

I'd choose a newer Kawi in good condition over a clapped out Honda at the same price.

How many people and weight do you plan to put in it?

Pioneer 500s are surprisingly fun to rip around in, because you reach the limits of handling so quickly. They also fit in the bed of a pickup which is neat.

Two, people. I'm chunky.

Id like to be able to put firewood rounds, gravel etc in the back. Think mini pickup that fits in the woods better than my truck and trailer.

May be tempted to cross the creek and go thru swamp..... But that may be asking for trouble.
 
I had a 2013 diesel Ranger for a while. Wasn't a bad machine for work. Was pretty slow for riding vs a gas job though, 35mph was about it.

Could hold ~1/3 cord in the bed. Probably way overloaded, but whatever

I was kind of trying to avoid diesel. The only other thing I have that is diesel is the chipper. I have lots of gas around. Diesel also sounds harder to start in the winter.
 
They do, but they also start every time and will haul anything including the occasional BDL without hesitation.

This one was sold at my employer cause it needed $9k worth of work engine dusted etc.
I put $1500 of parts on it including a $600 driveshaft and $200 winch and it has not missed a beat in 4 years.
So... they are kind of shitty but the parts to fix all the shitty was not expensive.

Suspension joints not grease-able, wheel bearings not grease-able, u-joints not grease-able or serviceable (that I could find).
The CV's wear out the side gears in the diffs and they make racket, I put Orings on the existing "wornout" shafts and that solved that.

Buddy of mine just bought a brand new Mule. They’ve redesigned much of the old pain points. And the old ones were legendarily tough. I’ve never seen one, but I’d go check one out before looking at the Teryx, I suppose.

This is becoming less of a problem as the market expands. New problem is having the lube ready when you pay for the parts, or waiting for parts from overseas.
I like my Mitsubishi but I picked it up cheap leaving room for repairs and maintenance, one that needs carb work and barely runs is often the best deal if you’re into a small project. I put a cv40 off a sportster on mine and it’s a ripper. Quite a few parts for mine have been cross referenced to off the shelf items at local auto parts places.
