this website converts a number of USFS maps into .gpx files :smokin:

https://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/pro...ohv_maps.shtml

listing of USFS MVUM's by state

Who here can print in a large format, prefer something that can be durable product to fold. Like a map? Yes, like a map.

https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE...eprd742002.pdf

this is the one i want, specifically. I have the .pdf and it is high quality resolution but there is no way in hell I'd be able to read it on an 8-1/2x11 paper and i'd rather not have to piece together a bunch of small sheets. Willing to pay, no idea what it's worth.

most ideal would be to get a topo map that was color, then print the MVUM to the same scale on clear so it could just be overlaid, but i'm not smart enough to know how to do that outside of "i wanna"

The USFS app actually appears to be useful for this. I haven’t used it much, but on one very small trip on Memorial Day it seemed great. It’s called USFS visitor map. Prior to that, I’ve used the map images in Avenza.

that doesn't make for functional wall art :flipoff2:

The pre-loaded GPS maps in my 2016 Ram took us on a very scenic journey through Hiawatha National Forest last week. We went 20-30 miles on 2-track roads trying to get back to something paved. It seemed to have every road in the place mapped. Even the ones that looked like they may be just traveled once a year to clear downed trees.

Have you called the FS or the local FS office?

They may have them, but I'm pretty sure you can order print maps.

Which brings me to another point of discussion, their website says they are not liable for the accuracy of the maps. How can they ticket people for being on the wrong (read closed) road if their maps can't be trusted?

I've always wondered about that piece. They don't have to be accurate with the maps, and they don't have to be accurate with their signage--everyone deserves a ticket.

Try and contact that Forest Service directly. tell they what you are looking for. see if they have a file available that is topographic and shows the roads on the MVUM. I know they have been made for some forests, I have shaded relief maps for our Forest.

If the MVUM shows a road open, it is open (unless a specific Forest Order is issued closing it or the area). the map may not be accurate as to the exact location of the road.
so the map may be inaccurate to location, but must be accurate for type and season of use
