Planning to steam clean and paint the underneaths of my 97 and 08 trucks. The 08 is getting rusty, to the point of some rust jacking on the double frame section.

Plan was originally to just get a couple cases of black gloss rattle can for ~$50 a case, but wondering if it might be worth spending a couple hundred on a gallon or two of decent paint?

I did the 97 when I got it around 5 or 6 years ago and it's better than before but not great.
Not too worried about it looking good, just keeping the rust at bay.

And not spraying it with used oil, tar, etc, that shit sucks to deal with later.

But not before getting the new floor welded in that dump truck so he can make cash on the side to fund the spray paint.
Doing that this winter before snow haul.
Have the $$, just been putting 4-5k a month to a couple bills, savings, and retirement.
Paid off an excavator in a year that had a 6 yr loan.

I get better value from rust paint by the can/brush program. Save the rattle cans for the tough spots.
True, but it'd take days to fully paint all the areas while crawling around under a truck. Vs a few hours spraying.

a softer paraffin wax sprayed smoking hot, then
No.

You work on shit that someone has done that to?

Great, it rusts less, but you end up looking like you took a bath in a grease drum, rolled around in cow shit and then dumped dirt on you working on that.

No thanks. I steam clean my stuff every year or two, can't stand the goop of years and years of leaks and dirt.
Have seen plenty of fires from that, like in skidder or dozer belly pans.

Paint keeps it clean.

VWs smell like crayons because their rust proofing is made out of crayons

I remember my mom having Zeibart put on a car in the late70’s early 80’s

I had a bed liner applied to a Jeep Tub and that tub rotted away. I was sad…. Still am.
(And I don’t live in salt country).

You do you.

I'm sharing how I do it - cheaply... for your benefit. I have time on my side (compressed work schedule).

USSR surplus cosmoline
I’ve been using this on various thing for years, clear and black.

I like tractor supply implement paint personally. Use it in gloss with the hardener and it seems to hold up well and dirt doesn’t stick very well. I hate matte finish for cleaning as it holds onto everything

No tractor supply here.

Fluidfilm IS sheep grease- lanolin.

It's also what I linked on Amazon.

And btw- who cares if the bottom of your truck is stinky? :rainbow: Do you buy grape-scented gear oil?

If you didn't live in the frozen north I would suggest some SPI black Epoxy but it needs 24 hours above 65°F.

Otherwise for the bottom of a truck an acrylic urethane will survive okay.

If you want the good shit find a boat supplier that will sell you something like Imron MS100 but be aware it has all the nasties in it.
