Turkeys and chickens

My advice is 4 or five hens and one rooster. You’ll have all the eggs you need and not much work or smell. My wife went completely overboard.
I'd say to bump that number of hens up a bit, and eliminate the rooster.
If you plan for 20% attrition you're probably safe, so maybe start with 7-8 hens and end up with 4-5

This might be right. My wife just told me the hens will produce just as many eggs without a rooster. (I thought they had to have a rooster)

Dont get a rooster.
Don't need them for eggs.
They will chase your wife around protecting the hens.
Nasty bastards....
Loved it when mine would chase the soon to be ex wife.

I will tell you that they're very happy (probably happier) to produce eggs WITHOUT a rooster around. None of our current batch of hens have ever felt the loving embrace of a rooster and all are happily pooping out eggs. They're generally less beat up by not having a rooster around too.
One rooster can easily 'service' 20 hens in a day. And he'll make sure he did a good job by servicing each one several times per day. He'll tag his favorites 5-6x per day.
I'd imagine a rooster will absolutely wear 4-5 hens out!

We had one rooster that was pretty aggressive. He'd attack my wife when she went out to feed them. She'd get suited up in Carhartt's in the summer so she wouldn't get beat up.
Obviously he didn't make it long....

Around here there are wild turkeys that roam in some neighborhoods. They aren't scared of people. Suburkeys.
Dont have to be suburban...was about 10 ft away getting into the truck for work when I took this. He and a couple others strutting their stuff in front of a gaggle of hens. The males have absolutely no sense in the spring...

Our Peacock died. Not sure what happened. My wife could not find a cut on his body. We had the grandkids here that day and I think one of them might have chased it into a fence. Really bummed us out.
