Track Days (HPDE)

Super Trofeo had a spate of failures of the Hankooks when they made the change from Pirellis a few years ago.

Max camber and minimum cold pressures were the “solution”. Every tire manufacturer struggles at the Glen, and Road America and Daytona. But at least we ain’t Goodyear at Martinsville

Seeing this thread pop up again I figured I would post up current progress on my track car. I started doing a lot more time trials and wanted to possibly get some W2W racing going so I am turning my car into a NASA approved ST car. For a time trial it could have pretty much just been left factory, but most time trail cars are far from that. This is the stage I am in now with putting a full roll cage in it. For simplicity I ordered a kit from track spec and other than my ability to weld being challenged in this cramped space the cage went together like a dream.

Yea it was a hankook f200. I had 2 issues. The first was this was this was the first time i have been on a true slick. When i turned into the bus stop i was expecting a lot more slip angle and i was early. I jumped the begining of the curb and side swiped the exit with the rear and it must of pulled it off the bead. All of this was a complete mistake and i had no intention on being on the curbs. The tire is destroyed because i drove on it all the way to the orange dot exit point at turn 8. I didnt want them to black flag the session.

The 2nd issue, i didnt find out until the next morn when i had a second tire go down after 25 min as i was going through turn 2. 105 mph heading up the esses on 3 shoes is scary as f. Managed to get to the orange dot exit at turn 4 without putting into the wall. Upon putting on the thrird tire the tpms sensor was found to have a loose nut so the tire was bleading air and of course the aftermarket tpms system has never worked with my telemetry so i had no idea.

Day 3 i was slow as i was pretty much on edge all day but the car held together fine. Then day 4 the brake peddle got soft in the morning session. I broke 2 wheel studs on the opposite side. I guess i stressed them with the flats as they were new this year. I had spares but ill put 5 new ones in just to be sure.

Im just verry happy (lucky) that i was not into the wall this week.

Between regionals and bad weather, it’s been a while since I have been to autocross. I have a new rear suspension and brakes, so there’s a huge learning curve and tuning to do, but it still got me second in our class.

Great report man. Track days make for awesome stories. Watkins remains a real man’s track with real consequences so anytime you load under your own power is awesome. I have shoveled more than one car into the trailer there.

Pics of ride?

I am getting on a plane sat to do a track day on Saturday with some of my friends.

I rented this for the event, should be a fun day!

Nice. Have fun. They are very capable rides. At autocross there was a new guy asking questions while we were doing the track walk. We gave him some pointers as he was a noob. He had a brand new corvette. He ran first heat so I got to talk to him on grid. He didn’t want me to ride with him because he was nervous, which is understandable. No biggie. On his last run I came back and he was excited he was getting faster each run. Good:smokin: that’s what you want. Good for him. Ramp up incrementally and get better.:smokin:

I am defiantly familiar with the platform, I had a Stingray for about 18 months and now have the Z06.

I did some hot laps at the MCM track in a C8 over in Bowling Green.

However, being able to play on the same track all day will be way better.

I think I have 6 sessions on Sunday.

I used to be into racing but have been out of it for almost 20 years (my gosh, wow seems like it was just yesterday, time flies in a bad way)

I used to do NASA.

We have a new track opening up close to my house (an hour away) so thinking I might get back into it, going to see how I feel after this weekend.

I am excited, I have been looking to get back into a hobby as working has really sucked up my life for the last 4 years.

:homer:

Make sure u keep checking the brake pads in that rental. They may not last the day.

yes my buddy has already warned me of that.

I am nervous about that for sure, I plan to take it easy and just have fun.

EDIT that is the nicest tow rig I have ever seen, you go Big Pimpin' !

Thx. Just your average '86 pete :). There was a decent build thread on the other site called re:pete. Although a lot has been done since.

Here is a crapy vid of the interior.

Dude that thing is even nicer than I thought!

I'd love to travel around in that and race, what a great life that would be!

Congrats for real, awesome!

Outstanding (well apart from the Florida in August part)

One of my favorite tracks. You can see the history on pit lane with the signs for the winning teams. Love the challenge there

Watch out for the bump in 17. Use the marker on the bridge to position properly and then do not lift (how most get in trouble / into the tires)

Mexican place on the lake is a good place for sundowners. Watch for float planes

Have an awesome time. The most dangerous part of the journey is to and from Orlando

Cow poke is a good place to eat if you want to get the meat sweats. Good for feeding larger groups.

For anything though, don't set your expectations too high, it's central Florida haha

The Blue Lagoon is a legendary local dive bar in Sebring, famous with the racers, if you're into that sorta thing :grinpimp:
Blue Lagoon + Crispins + newish New Balance + gold chain + vette = guaranteed 3 some at the trailer park to the west. Maybe get lucky and the “girls” have their own teeth. 😂😂

And if you strike out there - the Asian massage place in the strip mall across the road is a guaranteed score :lmao::lmao:

No idea where you are staying but, we used to sometimes do Lake Placid

Great Mexican place almost right at the Lake Placid Golf Club. And there was a place that had a great deal on Lobster /Prime Rib. Jaxxons maybe? More of a local hangout than the “tourist” spots in Sebring. 😄
Second Cow Poke - though I don’t go to Florida for beef.

One of my favorite things at the 12 hour is an early morning walk along the paddock as the sun rises in the east almost directly down the row of transporters, was over a mile long this year. Cup of coffee and enjoy the start of the day before the madness begins

Photos Crispins photos man
