What's new

Things you have found on the side of the road.

6 back up nozzles. That’s some next level thriftyness right there. Reminds me of all the shit I have thrown away and 5 minutes later I’m digging back out of the trash in case I “need it” later.
They were the nozzles that hold the straws good.

I take the old spray paint nozzle off and put it in the new can so I can save the new one.

Slightly obscure item but a few might recognize it... Roc Doc , trampas perhaps.

I was riding to a gig in a van years ago and the other guitar player was driving, and suddenly pulled over...he had seen an orange brick kinda thing on the side of the road, and knew immediately what it was, Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal:

boss_ds_1_distortion_1174251.jpg

It was a bit beat up but turned out to work fine...that was 15+ years ago and he still has it.

I had to walk down a section of highway near my house last summer, and what surprised me was how many 12 gram CO2 cartridges there were. Like what you would use in a BB gun. I must have seen 20 of them. I am assuming someone is using them to huff drugs or something? Anyone know? Either that or someone is doing a lot of drive-bys with BB guns.
They are all over Detroit. Called Whippets.

  • Few push mowers
  • Craftsman chainsaw complete with matching case. All it needed was tighten cylinder bolts. Worked good until it’s bar oil pump died and NLA. :frown:
  • Snap-On special tool kit in case, I think balancer installer.
  • Case with bunch of bushing driver pucks
  • Nice gas grill
  • Large rubber wheel chock
  • Yard tools. I have like 5 shovels :homer:
  • Nice chrome diesel tailpipe exhaust spout
  • I picked up a house vacuum cleaner with a ‘free’ sign almost 10 years ago, still using it today, never let me down once!
  • Not me but my parents. They found a dog and 2 cats from in backcountry on side of road into nowhere. Most likely they were dropped off & abandoned. They took them home. They are ones of our best family pets we had.
  • My dad found a 3500 gas generator & gave it to me almost 10 years ago. Crankcase full of gas from bad carb. I started converting it to LPG, still unfinished today  still can’t figure out how to make it to run correctly.

I pute cones down behind a paint striper for 5 seasons at 7mph. Other than putting cones down all there was to do was watch for trinkets in the ditches. Have a maverick 88 12 gauge couple pocket knives, leathermans, 1 chainsaw, 1 leaf blower, shovels, rakes, tool boxes, trailer tires, hitches, hitch pins, ect. Found a brand new mattress and box spring i had to pack out of road over bank never went back for it, a 1 inch 4x6 road plate that came out of a rollover in a really deep ditch that sat there for a week before i decided dude wasnt coming back for it.

In the winter we replaced road signs. Found lots of shit doing that to. Same small stuff as above lots of small bills and change, lots of drugs and sex toys. I guess When people wreck and cops and tow truck are on the way first think they think is better stash the meth pipe and dildo so i dont look horny and suspicious.
As for stealing signs just cost the tax payers a bunch of money to replace them but keeps people working i guess. Around here state signs are stamped with property of and county signs have a sticker. Its impressive what it cost the county to replace a sign. Seen it twice where supervisor had to go with cops and identity our signs hanging in someone's garage that had pissed the cops off and had a bunch of our signs.
Just to keep rambling ones that where constantly stolen we would pour them in giant concrete balls. Then they'd unbolt sign so we would theft nut the hell out of them. Then they would just cut the post off so we would grease the shit out of them. Usually solved the problem especially at school bus stops where kids like fuckin with them.
So how much does it cost to replace a sign? I need to know how many it takes to break even on a speeding ticket. :flipoff2:

magical 3rd avenue I assume. I always hoped for a rogue snowplow driver to go nuts and clean that street up and do the city a favor
You know it. Actually since covid hit they moved everyone to the Sullivan arena so most of the entertainment's gone.

In bulk, on a big project, they were in the $250-400 range depending on size and mount for what they call "small roadside signs". Bigger stuff with structural supports can be $10-15k. The really big cantilever and overhead bridge structures can be $50-100k.

People also don't realize how fucking big the overhead signs are. They look like they're maybe 7 or 8' tall when you're standing on the ground. In reality, some of them are upwards of 20' tall.

I found an orange plastic tool box that turned out to be a badass trauma kit.

And a Greenlee Gator. Battery powered cable cutter worth 2K. Now I'm the envy of every electrician in the field.

Not necessarily me, but guys that work for me…
Abandoned bikes, probably thirty a year. They get donated to the mens shelter.
Strollers
Wheelchairs, even a couple of electric chairs that work
A bullet proof vest
I dont even know how many phones, but over the years, hundreds.
Kindles
Tools, I have a complete set of gearwrenches I found in a ziploc bag.
Assorted sex paraphernalia,
A few dead bodies, the most recent was yesterday.
Cash, lots of cash
Change, also a lot.
So many clothes and blankets
Multiple brand new weed whackers., usually stihl’s
Little kids ride on jeep
Bicycle trailers

those are the major items. They are also things we have picked up. I am pretty sure that the really good stuff never gets reported.

No pic but a long shaft 1" impact. Sold it for $200 the next day to a happy guy. Obviously not the owner.

Last good score was a recently calibrated snap on torque wrench in the case but that’s going back several years now.

I see the odd wrench… load binder (didn’t stop) and I don’t stop for bungee cords but saw an abundance of them over the last year. Surprisingly, I have put 20k miles on my work car in 6 months and haven’t found any cool stuff and I have a territory that spans about 300 miles.

Plenty of neat shit
made in japan norco 20 ton bottle jack
10x 20' straps 4" wide with the foldover hook
only one of the slidey-track style ratchets for said straps
couple "bottom" halves of extension ladders, one fiberglass with the top end smashed, one aluminum with both ends smashed, both were 10' or thereabouts usable length after trimming the broken bits off
little tiny nailgun compressor
pair of klein high leverage linesman's pliers when I was way young, still got them

few spare tires, usually a garbage tire on a wheel so rusted that it is worthless, the cables like to rust off up here

Here's my find of the day. Was driving home and saw this thing in the middle of the road. At first I got all giddy cause I thought I scored another throw gun, but it was this fancy ass whatever. Can't believe no one ran it over. I almost caused about 3 rear end accidents from getting this thing.

Never find shit, i lose, my big loss recently was 2 1000’ 12/2 romex spools. Topper door opened, someone scored $1200 for picking them up :homer:

idiots prolly got $300 of meth money outta it
At most. I recognized it was gone and flipped a bitch and retracted my route and it was gone in 30 minutes before 7am in 10 degree weather.. meth heads unlikely where I lost them, probably beaners headed to the job site

I've got $50 shipped on it. 😁

That's me with my scrap bin. I'm always throwing shit in there that "I'm done with" and then sooner or later I'll go dig shit back out of there because it is the perfect little piece that I need for a project.

Then when I actually empty the bin it's like looking back at the last 6 months of my life and every project I've done. I could tell you what project generated damn near every piece...

Lot of random stuff.

Best score for me twice was ladders. One I still use exclusively and other gave to friend.

Dildos come to mind as prank to mind throw in someone's truck while driving to mind let hilarity ensure when they find it.

I found two group 27 batteries studded post, one was good the other was a core.

Cool, so most tickets can be a loss for the town with as little as two signs.

<screeches in OSHA>

When I was about 14 I found a pile of nudie magazines in a ditch. It seemed like quite a score at the time.
This is something kids today will never know. We used to go walk around and skate in the ditches just to smoke weed, cigarettes, and find porn. Great child hood memories right there.

I recently found a shoebox full of German kink mags when I parked to take my son for a bike ride. Like scat and piss porn.

I know, try explaining to the new helper that if you wanted to look at boobs on nightshift that had to bring a magazine with you:laughing:

Jobsite we had to park like 3 blocks away. As I'm getting out I notice a T sized argon bottle strapped to the phone pole next to the van.

When we came back that night it was still there so I tossed it in the van. It had been there a while, it had sunk an inch or so into the dirt.

Leaving glamis I spotted something under a bush. Whipped off the road to take a look. Dead illegal, called 911 and reported the location. Took off cause I was bored, never heard anything more about it.
