Actually looks like it latched open. It has a metal lip that looks to catch the spring base. Is this a thing?

the latch is a "fail open" thermostat

it's failed and needs replaced, but at least it won't fail and stay closed and overheat ya

going to need more information for the neck/housing, but that one could probably be saved, cleaned up, bondo'd, sand'ed and painted to dress up as good as new.

O'Reilly had one for 16 bucks. Looks like 94 E150 with a 5.8 matches. I remember the motor came from a van but didn't remember the year.
Waiting on paint to dry on the new thermostat housing now.
Good times.

According to the poppet valve gizmo for air purging, yes.

pshaw, the silly poppet vale :flipoff2:

the only thing that matters is that the copper block thing-a-ma-doo gets exposed to the HOT side so that it can force the spring to open

the goal is to control the temperature of the engine, not the radiator, so it needs to go colorful side into the engine side. Hopefully the hottest part of the engine :flipoff2:

it also usually only fits one way, but that thermostat neck just might be tall enough to fit it upside down

Figured the sensor side to the hot part and carried on.
All done now. Figure I'll let the RTV set before I add radiator juice.
