I get the same thing on occasion. I can have sleep paralysis without the no breathing part but more often than not it goes along with it. I’ve never had sleep paralysis when sleeping on my side which heavily implies to me that it’s associated with some level of sleep apnea. I know I don’t have major apnea but on occasion I get it and I think that they’re related. Interestingly enough, one trick I read about that is actually related to breathing and a napping out of the paralysis is to consciously manipulate the rate and depth of your breath in order to regain physical consciousness. Something to do with voluntarily taking over an involuntary system can shock the body back to life. Obviously this only works when there’s not a suffocating aspect to the paralysis.
I have thought the same thing about the relation to apnea. As it does happen in all sleep positions for me, but most notedly on my back. But unless I am sick and my ability to breathe through my nose is diminished or my throat has some swelling going on, I don’t really have any signs/symptoms of apnea. Now, with that said, I have not had any sleep studies. I guess I should, but the condition itself is to sporadic. I will say, I get it more often during naps than actually sleeping at night.
