The End of an Era

There are many opinions as to why she is being put out to pasture. Officially it is because of high operating costs.
Regardless of what the truth is, the US military is going to be feeling the impact for years to come.

lets hear the opinions

I was fortunate enough to get a hop on a kc10 from Malmstrom to Kelly and back when I was in the usaf. They let me hang with the boom operator when a buff was coming in for a sip of fuel. Pretty neat. I have basically the same picture as in the op taken with my old film camera. I had to wait to take the pic until the shades were down on the buff.

The replacement is the KC-46 Pegasus. It's supposed to carry more fuel and have better counter measures.
It absolutely does not carry more fuel than the KC 10. It may have better counter measures. Wouldn’t be hard as we didn’t have any.

It has also been plaqued with problems and as far as I know is still not FMC

Most, including myself believe in pressure from congress critters who hold stock in Boeing to purchase the KC46.

Neither the 135 or the 146 come close in capability, not only for aerial refueling but also cargo and passenger capability.

I’ll have to find a post from one of my old instructors about missions they flew during the Somalia campaign that demonstrated the flexibility.

Sad to see the old ones retired.

As a supplier to the gov for A10 engine parts, I feel like it will be hard to replace the brute strength they offer. And the price to build the new shit is ungodly...

I feel ya. I have over 70,000 nautical miles at sea on the Nimitz. She's being decommissioned next.
One of my old ships (USS Ford) is sitting on the bottom of the ocean. She was used as a target in 2019.

I wasn't there, but I hear she was an absolute bitch to sink.

And you hit the nail on the head. Price. More tax dollars are spread around with these new projects so they kill off old functional systems to get that sweet sweet pork.

Sad to see the old Tri-jets dying off... there's still a few flying around me for certain smaller operations. My favorite tri is probably the B727. Thanks for posting this!
10 Tanker is operating a small fleet of the DC-10's as retardant tankers. Always enjoy seeing them come around and watching what those pilots can do with that big bird.

It’s all over except the crying. 79-1948 blocked in at Davis-Monthan AFB at approximately 4PM EST today.

I spent my afternoon watching the ceremony at TAFB, tracking the flight on ADS-B Exhange and listening to ATC.

I’m having a hard time understanding why I am so emotional about this. The only thing that make any sense is the bonds that were made during my time flying. Based on what I’ve been seeing posted on social media and texts from old friends I think I’m not alone in that.

I take some comfort in the fact that Wright Patterson is only a few hours away. I think a yearly pilgrimage may be in order.

Now I’m just sipping on Captain and Coke ( always flew with the Captain:smokin:) and wiping the tears from my eyes
