Texas Pride Trailers

Check out their site of course they build other trailers, their buggy haulers are just very nice. They are known for building them for the Baja race teams and building them to handleBeing pulled around off-road hauling the trucks on them.

Perhaps the buggy hauler line, but the regular car haulers and goosenecks come from Sumner.

And I have never seen a weld as bad as the ones shown in this thread on any of the trailers coming out of Sumner, mine included. The welds are pretty nice.

I will say that I saw only one PJ car hauler or equipment trailer with a funky looking weld, while pretty much all of the PJ buggy haulers I looked at had bad ones somewhere on them. I wanted a buggy hauler so after finding bad welds on 2 at one lot and 1 at another I decided to steer clear of them. I do own an older PJ that's been great aside from one of the factory tires blowing while it was empty. Main thing I suppose is to thoroughly inspect whatever brand you buy to be safe.

After looking at some junk I
am going to be picking up this cheap old ass Superior trailer with brand new 6K Rockwell axles, deck, wiring, paint, blah blah. My neighbors are gonna love my new lawn ornament :homer:

fenders are 3/16 so some I'll add some gussets and they'll be drive over ready

The biggest let down was finding a 20 foot utility trailer with new 5200 lb brake axles, drive over fenders, new tires, blah blah blah. Drive 45 minutes to see it and when I show up and the pictures in the ad were clearly out of date. They had replaced 1/4 of the deck because the trailer had been overloaded and 2 of the crossmembers broke... but they don't admit that until I crawl under and start poking them about the the rewelding. Trailer was visibly fucked too

6x10 utility trailer, it felt a bit weird at times pulling it, a slight tug to side of road, perfect otherwise. Sold it since it sells faster being nicer than my other 6x10 trailer.

Got one of them 5th wheel style clamshell couplers.

Used to pull a trailer with one of those a lot at my old work. It was neat because you just back into it like a 5th wheel. That is if the stupid truck didn't have the lame ass old man step on the tail gate. you couldn't clear the tail gate at the right height for the ball.

You going to do anything cool like put a tent trailer on the neck?

Hopefully 20ft? you lose some deck space with that bracing and no tie downs in the first 2ft of the deck. Also, that neck looks short, how tall are the uprights? depending on the style of truck, id be worried about the bed sides on uneven ground.

No, but that is a nifty idea. I am a little wary of the coupler so I would probably end up replacing it down the road.

Fuck, that is a good point that I didn't even consider. :homer: You may have saved me a lot of money and heartbreak. The trailer is an 84 and my truck is a 16 so it sits higher and has taller bedsides than anything built at that time. I'll have him send me the measurements

Nothing wrong with them, I'm sure they aren't rated for 30k lbs like the normal bull dog, but you obviously aren't anywhere near that.

What brand? The trailer I mentioned was older (had 16.5s) and was always close to the bed on the 08-16 ford's we had. They were bone stock trucks.

The dodges and chevys are much deeper though. And I doubt it would work on one.

You could always lift it and make it a deck over, depending on how cheap it is.

The brand of the trailer is "Superior".

I asked for several dimensions and the seller told he would drop the coupler all the way and measure the height from the coupler to the arm because that is "the only one that matters". Perhaps, but it would matter if the trailer is far off level and the arm still might not clear the tailgate or the bed corners, especially on angles.

I could flip to spring over for another 3" or so of height.

The trailer is $3500 which is pretty damn cheap for around here so the work could be worth the savings..
.I am also balls deep in so many projects right now it might be nice to pay more and get something ready to run :homer:

I'd pass on that Superior for the reasons mentioned. Mostly the GN isn't high enough for your truck.

I have Two Lamar equipment trailers. A 14K 22' bumper pull and an identical 22' GN. I haul just over 12,000 (Cat scaled) on those decks regularly. 16,000 trailer plus load. Zero issues. Welds look as good or better than the other name brands. Wiring is some type of pre-made stuff with weather proof connections and tucked up pretty tight.

I haul heavy/regularly enough that I did have to go to the 14 ply tires. The original 10 ply's are a joke.

I bought both from Wade at Rt66 Trailers in Kellyville, Oklahoma. They were competitively priced.

Still waiting on measurements but obviously I'm impatient and anxious til then :homer: do you think it will be that close? From what I can find an OBS ford bed is 19" tall from the floor to the top of the rail. mine is 21" in the same place. It is 58 3/8" from the ground to the top of the bedrail at the corners.

And yes, I realize I could avoid all of this by buying something nice :laughing::homer:

How far is the trailer from you? It's not unreasonable to back underneath and check clearance, see how it tracks, etc before handing cash over.

Bout an hour drive away.

I meant to measure and do that while I was there but ended up BSing with the guy and completely spacing out on it.

Some of pj trailers are built in ohio. I wouldn't expect the welds to be any better if its built in the USA or Mexico. Welders that give a fuck cost money and a guy in Mexico probably cares more.

Whatever trailer you buy will have shit ass tires and will eventually blow out, not wear out. Remove and replace.

Kaufman trailer i use has good welds and is holding up, but the axles are shit. They offer nicer trailers but the price goes up.

The trailers you see advertised cheap are cheap for a reason, when you add dexter axles , led, good tires, sealed wiring ect, the price changes.

My 2cent

Tell him to level the deck and measure from the bottom of the neck to the ground.

The measurement he gave you is basically useless.

Yeah, good call.

Thank you guys for sanity checking me. Without even considering it I would have wrecked my bed and or tailgate with the trailer: it would only have about 3" of clearance between the tailgate and the bottom of the arm

Obviously the trailer could be up 3" in the front when you're empty though. 6" ain't bad, but I wouldn't go do a bunch of off road with it.

$3500 isn't bad, but anything that can hold a car around me is overpriced as hell.

Yea, $3500 was a pretty good deal because shit is the same way around here. A used 20-25ft gooseneck is usually 4.5-6k regardless of condition, which is what prompted me to start this thread about the Texas Pride trailers in the 6k ish range. A used car hauler of any age is generally $2500~ in runnable condition even though a new one is $3000 for one of the cheapies. The cheaper Big Tex and comparable car haulers are made of 3/16" angle iron and have a lip all the way around the trailer which I did not like.

my buddy offered to pick the trailer up for me so I didn't have to worry about damaging my truck. I could then modify the neck or do a spring over but decided I didn't want to mess with any of that at this time.

I ended up buying an 18' bumper pull equipment trailer with 5k axles for $1800 today. It needs a tire, some boards, and wiring but that is manageable and will get me wheeling quickly enough.

To circle back and address some of the questions asked in this thread I don't really need the GN at this point even though it was a big want. At the start of the year I was thinking I would be getting into a 30ft to haul hay for the GFs horses and be able to take my truck and her jeep to the trails without being doubled on tow rigs and car haulers... Then we broke up. All I need to do now his haul my shit and pick up axles etc blah blah. My buddy says I'll probably want a bigger trailer down the road but I'll face that when it comes. He's knows me and is usually right  I expect to be able to break even on this trailer.
