Any experience with them? Anything to look for or avoid?

Have someone offering to trade a TL12 high flow machine w/ aux cooler and a disc mulcher. Looks like it was probably original a rental forestry machine w/ a mulching head. It has the brackets on the rear for a winch frame that I've seen pics of on other identical machines + the aux cooler kind of gives it away.

Overall seems to be in decent shape. Pins and arms all felt tight. Tracks are a little rough and probably have 1-200 hours left in them. Looks like new tracks and sprockets will run ~$3500.

The disc mulcher is a china import so I'm not putting a lot of value on it.

I love my older TL150. It has a Yanmar engine and not a Kubota. It probably has 3500 hours on it. Being as that machine was a mulcher probably all its life would be a negative since the hydraulics have been used at high pressure most of the time.

I'm like 80% sure we had a decently long thread about Takeuchi skids a year or more back.

the Chinese mulcher likely has weird blade bolts and blades, will suck for actual brush maybe fine for heavy grass and now rocks on uneven ground

all depends what you are trading to him. i just bought another tl140, so now i can just leave one in Colorado and one in Texas. They seem like good solid machines, mine has an isuzu 81 hp motor. i lent mine to a buddy that hit it with a bit too much either and cracked some piston rings. so i did an inframe on it a few years back with Ebay parts kit. i just redid some cylinders on it. they peened the metal into the lock nut, a bit of a learning curve. i bought mine out of long island and had it shipped to Texas, way cheaper than i could find local. the other one i picked up is in the springs, i will pick it up next week. it has heat and AC so i am sure it will be my go to machine pretty quick. i have replaced the tracks, one drive sprocket. it was just plain old work, nothing crazy.
now i need to clean up the little ls180 i have at the house and put it up for sale.

Luckily (or maybe not) it comes with a spare parts mulcher that had the spindle bearings weld themselves to the shaft....but has a complete disc minus a few teeth he'd already robbed.

It used standard allen head bolts and these teeth, which appear to be readily available, though not cheap. I'm sure I can source them straight from China if ever needed. The ones on it looked to be in surprisingly good shape for the 20-30 hours he claimed were on them. I expected them to be made of soft chinesium and already showing heavy wear.

High flow burning hot oil right above your head...what could go wrong?
That seems like a pretty typical setup for a forestry machine.

I paid $27k for the tractor a few years ago and it should be worth $30-31k right now, but I've also had it for sale and on consignment at my local dealer and it's not moving. People aren't spending that kind of money right now. Dealer said he hasn't even sold a new machine in several months. People are likely waiting until they see what happens in November. :shaking:

Looking at recent action sales, it seems the skid is worth right around that. I figure the mulcher is worth a couple grand so it's basically about an even trade, but I have a lot more use for the skid in the immediate future over the tractor. And I think I could clean it up and throw a new set of tracks on it and get my money back if I decide I don't really need it in a few months.

Biggest drawback is that it's a big fucking machine. It weighs almost 13k alone, plus probably another 2-2.5k for the mulcher. None of my rigs or trailers can move it. He's willing to deliver it to me, but if I need to move it later for whatever reason, I'll have to sub it out.

Sounds like it's just the right size then!

Mine is 8 k and often I wish it were heavier.

Large frame skid steers are nice. The occasional float charge will be worth it.

5800 lbs operating load and 11800 tipping load would be fucking sweet. Just look at all the stupid shit I do with mine with only a 5000 lbs tipping load.

i would not be scared to tow that around with a half ton. granted i would use a weight distributing hitch with a sway away set up. but honestly i have towd that much behind the wife's yukon xl with a standard hitch and no brakes. mine weighs in a little over 10k and work well.
and make sure he chucks in a bucket.

Oh yeah, I don't need this machine. But I definitely need it. Biggest downside to the weight is that if it were in the ~10k range, I could haul it myself and maybe pick up the occasional side job for it. There's no way I can legally haul this one without being in CDL territory, which I'm not interested in.

13k on a 10k rated trailer behind an 11k rated truck wouldn't bother me at all for the occasional move.

Figure, minimum 15k for the machine + attachment. An 18-20k trailer that can tow it is going to weigh at least 4-5k. My tow rig will pull it all day long even though it's only rated for ~14k. But my tow rig also weighs 8k. 15+4+8=27k. If I ever find the dually 12v or 7.3, I'll shave some of the tow rig weight off that equation and could get there, but not something I'd be excited about doing very often.

Fixed.

I've replaced enough bent axles on my trailers from doing stupid shit to not want to do stupid shit any more.

wifes 15 yukon has surprised me, it just flat out works for a half ton. and the trailer is a 14k that is my go to.

I have a 15 or 16k tilt deck, but it's a steel deck and heavy SOB and weighs over 5k alone. I'd be fine moving it across town. At night. But I'd be well over my tag weight. Over my GVWR. And very close, if not over CDL weight. Not something I'd want to do regularly or get caught doing at all.

they don't even give me a look here in Texas. as long as it is not a dually gooseneck trailer.

That sounds like a quitters attitude.

Sun tan a lot or paint skin brown.
Practice saying “No hablo” while shaking your hands in confusion.
Get skid steer moved. :smokin:

Edit: wear sombrero and Mexican blanket for extra street cred.
Edit 2: have lots of Taco Bell wrappers on the floor of your truck. Be actively drinking from Taco Bell cup if if get pulled over. It will help sell you are an authentic Mexican.
Edit 3: dent several of your side panels on your pickup and take a wire wheel to the paint to authenticate the Mexican look.
Edit 4: have a rosary hanging from the mirror and a cassette tape playing of Selena.

Buddy has a Takeuchi 140 with the Isuzu engine and it's damn reliable. as mentioned tracks are about $3k i think? Dave's is a low flow machine and his brush hog works it pretty hard if cutting thick heavy brush.

You could always dethmachinefab it and put a trailer coupler on one of those extra quick-tach plates you bought. Then just need one of those little dollies to drive onto like the big-boy excavators when they're getting towed with a dump truck. :lmao:

I'm surprised that custom-built purpose-made trailers aren't a thing specifically for moving skid steers. You could shave a ton of weight off a trailer if was minimalist, although you may have to make two trips to bring the accessories.

i can get my oil hot pretty quick bush hogging the thick shit. but mine are not high flow.

I can say for sure that the Texas DOT isn't like most other DOT's in the country. We have so many commercial trucks driving through the state on any given day that the DOT can make all their money bothering those guys so I don't think they care much about an occasional private BDL passing them. Other states, not so much.

We have a tl8 hi flow at work. The guys were using it with a wood processor making fire wood bundles and you can do it from in the cab or on remote controls outside. They used remote controls most of the time so they didn't see it asking to regen. Too many skipped regens and it locked itself into limp mode. $1500 and a trip 2 hours away got all that shit gutted and deleted from the computer. Still looks stock but it runs like a top now. :smokin:

Been a solid machine outside of that one issue.

You can fit a bucket and one other thing in a truck bed depending on what that other thing is.

I think the low height angle iron trailers and mini tilt decks you see the asphalt guys hauling rollers on are close enough for 90% of people who need that.

not with a gooseneck.

Serious question, are the cops/Sheriff/DOT that serious/hardcore where you are? I'm KC adjacent, if I go North 12 miles I'm in that county and try to avoid major highways around there for state DOT and troopers, but can avoid 99% of the time by going at the right time. Just hauled my dozer to near KC metro on a sunday morning, 10' wide, take side roads, no overwidth banner, claim farmer 🤷‍♂️

Also, every TL I've been around from the 140/150, a 240, and 4 TL12's have been solid. Not sure about the V2 TL12, emissions garbage, no idea if they bought a good package or if its all downtime crap.

do you run farm tags on the semi? I am on the MO side and not sure is KS has a F sticker on your plates to designate farm tags.

Yep, farm tagged, even though *most of the work isn't "farm" But lets not split hairs  Just wear a seed hat and chemical company shirt

It's hit or miss around here. There are sections of highway where they're known to harass private vehicles. You'll hear about people getting busted, and then you won't hear anything for several years. NC has some goofy laws.

You have to get weighted tags for the max combined weight you'll ever pull, even if it's only once a year. I'm tagged for 14k because that's about the break point where the fees go up substantially. I'm usually over that when I tow my wheeling rigs, but I think the fine I might get once every few years is less than the registration fees. If I were to tow that heavy more often, I'd probably look at getting more legal.

Technically if your trailer is rated over 10k lbs, you need a non-cdl class A. :shaking: Some people get them, most don't.

Technically if your GVWR is over 10k, you're supposed to cross the scales. Even if not commercial. I've never heard of anyone actually doing it nor getting stopped for not, but it's on the books and technically they could bust you for it if you passed a scale and didn't stop. I have avoided certain routes in the past because I didn't want to risk it.
