Starter cnc software?

Like eating a elephant, one bite at a time.
Ive thrown a little time here and there at it and im starting to get the hang of the why things are the way they are and do what they do, theres definitely alot going on with these things.

Is there a preferred method for attaching the tslot plates? Supposedly this machine was used before but there isnt any holes drilled in the plates to mount them and there is 6 tslot mounts installed around the inner perimeter so im wondering if im missing some type of L brackets he may have used?

Would a piece of mdf cut to fit the ID of the machine frame and set on the screws be solid enough to use as far screwing down work pieces while I learn?

I use CAMBAM for the last 15 years. It's 2.5D but can do 3D surfacing once you're used to it.

It can draw as well as import DXF, STL etc.
