Spinoff: How much food do you keep on hand?

More than I had... less than I want. Had to dig into stash earlier this year:homer::emb:

I've been keeping eye on deals and tossing them in the freezer. Lately, my local market has been selling peperoni for $2 per pound and a deep discount on hot links:eek: Another store was doing $0.50 mac/cheese:eek: I've been adding canned goods as I can along with other items.

I'm not a prepper, but I have 2 deep freezers full of beef, one of the privileges of the family owning a ranch is about once every 18 months I have a steer butchered and this year I went and did a 1,600 lb steer which was too big in honesty, but filled up my 18cu ft and a 11 cu ft deep freeze.

We do stock a lot of the baking goods like suger, flower and stuff but not in a way that we could ration it out....

As long as we dont lose power or the deep freezers bite the dust we could probably last about 3 months on our food on hand.

One chest freezer for meats, one for everything else frozen. Full fridge and freezer in the kitchen at all times, plus cabinets and pantries full to the brim.

At any given point in time, I could go months on the foodstuffs on-site, less perishables like milk and eggs... but I can get those from the hobby farm 1/4 mile down the street..

Over a years worth of Wise food buckets, milk, eggs, fruit.

Plus enough ammo to make everything my neighbors have........in a 2 mile radius......mine too.

I have a couple roosters and chickens… 6 goats and deer, moose, bears all around and plenty of ammo to get me some meat when the need arises.

We live in the woods so have plenty of dry goods and canned stuff on standby.

We also have neighbours who have been in this area since the 1800’s who know how to live off the land here and luckily we are good friends with them… they also have thousands of cattle and sheep as a group.

Meh, could hold out for a month or so probably with just normal supplies that I have on hand...frankly if shit is gone that sideways for that long, I'm probably dead or would want to be.

1/2 a cow in the freezer. A lot of flour, sugar, salt, rice, etc. Canned vegetables. 50+ gallons of gas. An alarming amount of ammunition. We have chickens and ducks and a spring for water if the well pump doesn’t have electricity.

Fresh food, couple weeks
Frozen food, several months
Freeze dried food, 6 months if rationed

If needed, power out, I have enough propane on hand to run the 20kw for 3 months full load, likely 6 - 9 months rationed
Well water that is potable
14kw 3 phase genset has enough diesel for 3 months.

When isolated in the past, like not evacuating for fires we have run short of
Milk, we keep several gallons frozen. UHT type milk would be a good idea if prepping properly
Beer, poor planning, and we ran dry, even rationed after a few weeks. I now usually have a month or two supplies on hand, but I don't drink nearly as much as in the past. Plenty of liquor
Gas. Amazing how much gas I was going through when the fire evacs were in place. Between the gas generator, chainsaws, weed wacker, mower, and the farm 125cc bike, I burned through all the gas I had in cans, and had to syphon from a couple vehicles
Fresh bread, solved with supplies and a bread maker
Beer is a DIY as the ingredients are dry easy to store, just add water type thing...well that and coming up with a recipe ya like.

Doncha worry once we are all on claus schwabs suggested diet it will come out like rabbit pellets non stick.
That's just what eating a proper human diet does to you. Other than a small amount of candy my kid eats meat, cheese and vegetables pretty much exclusively. Mostly because that's what we have, but he typically doesn't want rice, noodles, Mac and cheese, etc , even when we cook it. I'd say maybe once a week he actually needs to wipe after a particularly massive shit.

You slacking big time, like you haven't had enough time to prepare for the coming events, OMG very disappointed in you the board is!

Im down to eat my neighbors so i have plenty of food

Non-perishable probably a years worth, maybe more. Living in a small studio apartment thwarted my true intentions and when that wasn't bad enough my ex-Mrs. scooter threw out about 500 cans of stuff because "it's expired by a year" Oh and this was at the start of covid when I was in Pittsburgh for 5 weeks while training with Schneider. She is lucky I love(d) her as much as I did. Stupid fucking see-you-next-tuesday city slicking retard of the highest caliber.

Serpentine belts make good whips and binders.

Weird af if you ever use car parts in the bedroom though.

A pretty decent amount I’d say. We have 2 freezers in the basement, though one is a fridge freezer combo that’s about to be replaced with a full size freezer (previous owners left it and the compressor is making some serious noise and we never use the fridge part) we also have cabinets and shelves down there for bulk dry goods, canned goods, and stuff we can ourselves. We typically do a grocery run every 2 weeks or so because food shopping sucks. Hot the bulk store maybe every two to three months to load up the backup pantry. On our own well so water isn’t an issue.

Buy N Large, costco etc

Three stand up freezers full of primarly pork, beef and chicken. Enough fuel to run the generators for a month or so. A decent size pantry stacked full. A few chickens running around, a few head of beef on the hoof that would need protected, probably 60-70 days of freeze dried rations. I do need to get a hand pump for my well. Enough ammo to outlast my tactical skills. :lmao:

Never really considered it as prepping thou, just like to know I can get by.

I think I have enough to keep the family alive for about 6-8mos or about 3months if we lived and ate somewhat normal. More if I hunt and fish (walkable)

Edit: we could likely become fairly self sustaining pretty quick if the whole family was home every day.

Not really a prepper just what we keep on hand especially after the bullshit we went through here in canada during covid, 2 deep freezers full of beef and chicken, and another full of deer and other wild game.

Close to 40 pounds of rice and 20 pounds of various pasta’s with an assortment of sauces plus prob 3-4 months of canned goods.

Right now since its the summer all 3 freezers are on solar power with the ability to run the well pump off of it in emergencies if needed.

Dual fuel generator that i keep 200 pounds of propane on hand at all times plus 140ish litres of gas, sometimes more in the winter.

This is for 3 people, future plans include doubling solar output and storage with a higher Efficiency/ better controller for the winter months, and a propane hotwater on demand unit with a dedicated 600 pound tank just for it.

I found this interesting and didn’t know exactly where to put it. I thought about putting in the “ what did you do today for your health?” Thread but here.

We buy a 1/4 or 1/2 beef every year and a whole hog every year. Our freezers never are empty. We also keep a stockpile of canned goods so we can survive for awhile.
I know a couple guys local that have 50bmg’s and other long range weapons, and several of us have the short range covered. If there’s ever truly a SHTF event I feel pretty confident we can pool resources and last quite awhile. We’ve had these discussions.

I have enough for 3-4 weeks on hand at any given time. I figure if the crap hits the fan that bad, someone better armed than I am would come take anything I have hoarded up away from me within a month anyways.

Just GF and I here, we could go 6-8 months eating normally, if it looked like a long term deal we could ration and make it maybe a year and a half and this is just with what we have on hand. If you factor in hunting and gathering / gardening we could go a lot longer.

We've been kinda discussing stocking up on trade goods like sugar, coffee, chocolate and soap, tooth paste shampoo etc.
