I sold my non running 93 XJ a few months ago to a nice kid that promised to get it back on the road. He got it running and now wants to get it plated. He or someone in his family lost the title I turned over to him. Its a VA title and I live in NC. I never swapped the title to NC but it was plated here by me in the distant past. Probably close to15 years ago.

He is trying to figure out the best way to get the thing plated in NC. I'd like to help as it would get my old jeep back on the road.

Not sure how much I can help from here in NC since it is a VA title. Never dealt with this before.

Best for him to file for a lost title? Would me writing a bill of sale help him out?

Any suggestions?

If he never titled it into his name, it's still in yours. You could just request a new title from VDMV for a lost title. Then sign it and send it to him to title wherever he wants. It would cost you probably a few bucks to get a new one though.

However you can get a replacement title, that'll get the situation leveled out. Just have to sign the new one over.

Last time I did one in PA they would only send it to the address on the title.

Appears I need a VA drivers license to log into their system. I haven't had one of those since 95!

Not sure what the address on the title is. Likely my previous place of residence in NC. Not where I live now

Looks like you can do it with your SSN.

FYI - you need a "substitute title" not a replacement title in order to change the address.

Around here the legal owner goes into the DMV with the new owner and you transfer it on the spot no biggy. Last time I did it was with a guy that works here, we swapped rigs. He didn't even have his title, the gal looked it up and then handed us the form to fill out. We walked out with our new registrations in 10 minutes.

Easiest way is you get a replacement and sign it over and then go to the DMV with him and make sure he transfers it over. Does not have to be running for him to transfer it.

How did you do this? Plate in NC with a VA title, but not swapping the title.

Virginia dmv hates you and WANTS you to know so. If he drives back to VA they will print one out for him there, but he's not.

Bought XJ new in 93. Financed for 4 years with VA bank. Moved to NC in 95. Got NC license and plates shortly after. Bank in VA sent title when it was paid off and I put in in my file cabinet. NC never made me change it to an NC title.

I drive through VA from time to time to see my folks. I can make that happen if needed.

Just noticed their "Secure Email online form is only available from 8AM to 1PM M-F... they do hate me! :lmao:

I dont believe you
We have a bunch of small licensing offices around here. They're actually efficient and at least attempt to give a shit. The DOL is a whole 'nother animal, they hate you and do whatever they can to bring you down to their level.

That's bizarre. Granted I've only had a loan on a vehicle once in my life and only for a few months so I've never moved to a different state and registered a vehicle where I didn't hold the physical title in my hand. But it was always my understanding that you couldn't register a vehicle in mosts states without the vehicle being titled there.

Kind of reminds me. I have a '94 pickup that hasn't been registered in ~20 years and is technically still titled in SC....which I moved from in '94. I also have my '69 that's still titled in TX, which I left in 2012. I lost both titles in one of my moves and should probably go about getting replacements for that long off day where I might actually get them running and register them again.
TX is generally easy and you can do it online.....except the '68 only has a 7 or 8 digit VIN and won't pull up in their automated system. :shaking:

You probably can't, but you can show proof from the loan instead of the title to register. DMV doesn't give a shit where the bank holds the loan if it's legit so the state doesn't matter. That only comes into play once you own the vehicle outright.

I guess that makes sense since it's not like you're going to get the bank to retitle it when you move. I've just never had to deal with it. I took a loan on the first real, almost new truck I bought like 10 years after I got out of college....and then paid it off in 6 weeks after I moved some money around. Fuck owing money on a depreciating asset.

I’m no help but good on you for helping the kid out. So many times this type of thing ends up with someone stuck without a way forward. There’s good buy/sell karma coming your way

When we sold the wife’s car a couple years back somehow the guy wound up throwing the title away. When they called to ask for assistance, my wife told them tough luck and didn’t bother mentioning it to me until the next day.

What goes around comes around. It mailed them a duplicate title the next day.

As one who moved frequently when younger, generally the title is requested from the finance company to the state DMV HQ, then the DMV sends the new title to the lienholder. The lienholder releases the new title upon payoff.

I'd be checking with NC for the title.

They get real pissy here if you buy a "Vehicle" and not put it into your name and then sell it.

They call that curb stoning and according to Google thats a felony (LOL) in most if not all states.
