What's new

So paying someone to do brakes on all 4 corners just costs $1k these days.

I've had 3 co-workers in the past month who aren't car people need brakes on all 3 corners of their cars and all were just around $1K. Looking at the parts (because everyone just replaces rotors now), it's like $600 just for parts. Shit sucks.

They all drive reliant robins :flipoff2:

Guy that works for me was quoted $900 for rotors and pads on a Subaru. Parts at O'Reilly were ~$260.

I daily drive a jetta and parts are retarded for it, but no where near 600 dollars for brakes retarded

On my trucks, good rotors are about $100 each. Pads are $50-60 an axle.

On shitbox cars, you could probably do all for for close to $200 in parts.

Those shops are definitely upcharging $200 in parts to $600, then $400 in labor. Paying the goober tech $25/hr then complain how hard it is to run a shop :flipoff2:

Money
If you have any, they want it.
Some of these "replace everything " idiots are nuts.
Now sometimes it's cheaper than having rotors turned.
Shit my favorite machine shop stopped turning and sold the equipment.
Fubar

My wife drives an Acura MDX, and we got a quote for about a grand, so I looked up a youtube video on the proceedure, as I don't have a Haynes or such for it. The calipers have a cool little lever that opens access to the pads, don't need to even take the caliper off the rotors, or even take the wheels off the front. Under $100 and maybe 20 minutes of my time.

I worked at a independent European shop 20 years ago and it was between $4-500 per axle on most of the vehicles we worked on. The cars I drove, I would buy the $10 white box rotors and decent pads and usually still be under $100 in parts for 4 corners

Somebody I know just spent over a grand for this and they didn't even replace the calipers. A week later, after one caliper seized, he was in for another 1k brake job (they replaced the pads at the other 3 corners again that likely had no wear)

I haven’t turned a rotor in over 20 years. If the rig is something I care about it gets new rotors. If I don’t care about it it just gets new pads slapped on.
This. Never saw the point in turning vs just replacing unless you have some high end, expensive rotors. Everything I've ever had has been basically cheaper to replace than have turned.

How often are people doing rear brakes? Ive seen cars with over 100k on them and tons of meat on the rears.
I've got 212k on my Ram 1500 and still on the original rear pads. Fronts got replaced at 160'ish. Lots of hwy driving, so YRMV.

Work just paid 1500 for a trans filter change + fluid. 2500hd, not Ferrari.

Most people, don't replace pads till its metal on metal. I think oreillys charges $25 a rotor, depending on the vehicle its worth it just to amazon a new set and slap it together.

At the subaru stealership i worked at 10+ years ago, it was common place to turn all 4 rotors and pad slap. Think they sold it as a 30-40k service along with flushing brake fluid. Wheel the machine over to the car on the lift and walk away, rotor never left the car.

I dont recall that practice at CDJ.

I was tired of hearing about Scary vibrations when braking when I did them all at once. The rear pads were far enough gone I didn't see a point to leaving them.

My dodge is at 125 on stock rears. Fronts got a power stop package at 60k when the pads were done.

I thought everyone knew brake shops were a racket? How is this new?

My dad said to me when I was 16 and needed brakes on my old POS El Camino I drove in high school (ya, I was THAT awesome) "If this is the only thing you learn about fixing vehicles, it will save you thousands". He "taught" me by having me jack up both sides of the rear, take both wheels off, disassemble one side and rebuild it while having the other side to look at for reference.

Of course I'd been working with him on other things for years, but that was the first time he completely stood back while I worked on my own car with the possibility of death if I fucked up. Of course he QCd the work. (he was a mechanic by trade)

Same deal when I worked at a Subaru dealer. Always thought it was crazy how no customers ever asker for a price to just replace instead.

Rotors only got turned if they actually needed it. If they didn't they stayed on the car and the owner got charged anyway.

My dad paid $750 to have the rear rotors and pads replaced on his Mini Cooper. I straight up told him he got ass fucked. Probably a 30 minute job to do both sides while drinking a beer.

I'll turn rotors if they're worth it but usually it's a few bucks more to buy new. Stuff lime 2k+ dodge are slip on so I'll usually turn them for $10 a pop vs $60 to buy new. Shit that has to go on the back side of the hub gets new rotors every time. Fuck going through all that shit and not going for the longest possible life of the part. :homer:

Tire places like les Schwab get $800 per axle and they buy their parts from vatozone, advanced and O'Reilly's just like everyone else. It's insane. I do brakes for $400 an axle clearing $200-250 per.
