Today was the first day of school for the kiddo (3rd grade). We're one of the few schools in the county doing in class learning. Some idiot parent sends their kid to school with 103 degree temp, school nurse who was taking temps lets the kid in for some stupid reason and manages to get 4 teacher aids sent home for 2 weeks. New pick up and drop off system is a total mess that takes close to an hour so everyone stay's distanced and recess consists of a playground full of kids staying 6' away from each other unable to use the equipment or share balls. What a shit show. My kid loves school but both my wife and I expect the IL health dept to tell us that everyone is going to remote learning within a few weeks. How are all you parents out there doing so far?

son is 2 weeks in on distance learning for K. wife is a teacher so she is attempting to teach while manage our son. its gone so well it was made clear in no uncertain terms that i need to work from home one day a week. i usually get an update picture of him having some sort of meltdown a few days a week.

My wife works in the special needs classroom, which brings the shit show to an entirely new level, but she doesn't want me broadcasting details on the interwebs. Lets just say she came home and firmly requested I make her a drink. I, on the other hand, got a lot of stuff done today with them out of the house finally.

Day 6 of Sr year remote learning.

Received a telecon with his advisor on day 4 that he was not participating in any classes and turning in sub par work.

His laptop was promptly relocated to the living room next to my wife who is recovering from back surgery. When she recovers and returns to work he will be moved into my office.

I know exactly how much work I put out my Sr year and that was in class, little to none. If I were doing remote for my Sr year I would want to take the GED and be done with it.

Oh I know that 100%. I graduated with a great GPA but only because I figured out how to get all my credits through work release.

He fought us every step of the way last year. I fully expect him to drop and GED this year.

At least he is working hard at work and making money.

Big problem for us is he is only 16. He wants to move out badly. He wants to be emancipated. We laughed and told him if he could find a judge to release us of liability to have at it. Haven't heard anything about that since.

LOL I took the absolute minimum of classes and my buddies and I arranged so we had 2 hour lunches

my wife is a special ed teacher as well. the govt is insane, she is expected to hold IEPs for kids shes never met and based on district policy can not test. good times

Our schools start in person for all grades tomorrow. I’m sooo glad I retired last summer.

My daughter hasn’t started yet. August 31 is supposed to be her first day of 1st grade. We still don’t know of she will be in person or remote just yet. The school has been keeping us updated on the progress of what they are trying to get in person approval. San Diego is one of the counties on Newscums little watch list, but cases have been trending down so we may be off the watchlist and able to open for in person by the 31st. Alternatively there is apparently some waiver form that the school is looking into to allow them to open for in person. It is a private school so they have more leeway than the public schools here which have already said watchlist or not will be distance learning to start the year.

we are frankly hoping for in person as we really could use a bit of a break. Between my daughter and my 18 month old son the wife and I have been run pretty ragged over the last few months being essentially stuck at home with them constantly. Wouldn’t be so bad if we could actually take them out and go do stuff with them, but the playgrounds are all still closed, water park didn’t open this summer, beaches have been mobbed and no parking lots open at the beaches, etc.

Going to home school this year along with an “outdoor co-op” that we helped start as an option to help counter the shitty school district. Starying K with a 2y/o in his heals. Covid is only one reason. Shitty district SI as well as our principal quitting for a secure job after the super tried to fire him on bogus financial reasons. Even after getting his job saved we cant blame him for wanting something secure.

Wife has been back for nearly 2 weeks but still has 2 more to go before any kids show up.

she was told today that only 7 of her 18 kids will be on premise. She usually has 22 or so kindergarteners so 7 would be a cakewalk.

Unfortunately she fully expects to be sent home within 2 weeks of kids showing up. I’m not sure she can do another few months of online teaching. Half her kids made zero contact with the school after they closed in March. I doubt this year will be any better.

Our school offered a choice and 202 of 240 students opted for in person. From what I've heard, the students that needed to be in school the most are the ones that opted for remote. Unlike the spring, our school is mandating that remote work be turned in on time and graded which means the parents must email it. I'm sure thats not going to work for some of these parents.. Hell we even had a parent that opted for remote ask on the FB group what the school is doing for breakfast and lunch options for remote students. Don't think they liked the "what are you cooking?" answer.

It's going to be the stupid parents that will get the school shut down again. The one that sent their kid in today with a fever had to know it and in the process took out 4 staff members in an already severely understaffed classroom. The state is saying they have to reach these goals, but handicapping so severely that success is impossible. This is causing much stress on the teachers as well as the kids.

Just dropped my youngest off at college today... momma had a melt down when we were leaving the neighborhood and everyone was walking their kids to our nearby elementary school. Hard to believe that every August from ‘04-‘13 we made that same walk with our girls and just so happened we drove by this morning with the truck loaded heading off to college, where the hell does time go?!?

I don’t envy you that have to take on the roll of educator, I have no advice that might help. I can tell you to enjoy those moments, however frustrating they might be, take the time to reflect on the mini and major milestones. It’s fawkin true, it’s over before you know it...

The HS only had 22 out of around 400 students opt for remote learning. My wife works for a very low income school. I think so many of hers aren't coming in simply because the parents don't want to get up early enough to get the kids to school. They have absolutely zero intent on teaching them either. Last year it was pretty well known that nobody was going to fail, no matter how little work they turned in. Im sure they think the same thing will happen this year. (it probably will unfortunately)

I can just about guarantee those parents will be demanding free school lunch and breakfast delivered to their door also.

I feel sorry for you poor bastards. This would absolutely suck to go through.

Yea, I'm not looking forward to the after effects of all this. Kiddo isn't in school yet and daycare was pretty much shutdown. Who knows what is going to happen after the election is over. For whatever reason, I see doing the whole online thing becoming standard replacing going to an actual school.

I'm in your old town still (O-Town). The oldest is supposed to start tomorrow with the virtual learning. Since he has an IEP, he will be going to school for some of his therapies which is good as being around other kids really helps him out quite a bit. Getting him to do the online stuff is nearly impossible (yeah... my 6 year old is going to sit and watch hour and a half long videos... )

D90 and D203 are such an unbelievable shit show it has us to the point where we are very likely to sell the house we just built to move across the river. It was a 70/30 split on folks that wanted in class vs. E-learning. About one week prior to the start of school, the district said "Nope, everyone has to go E-learn even though we had been planning on doing a "return to class". So that's been... fun.

The biggest aggravation is that literally every district around us has had a plan in place for months now for several different scenarios depending on what situations arise. The O-town districts waited until the last minute to come up with anything.

Thankfully the wife's work is very flexible (contract gig), so we can work inverted schedules to give the kids some 'normal' school time. It would really suck if she had to go into the office the same time I do.

I am a high school history teacher in the Inland Empire area of SoCal. We are in our 2nd week of this distance learning/teaching model. The daily participation rate amongst my students is between 95%-100%. I have been "live" with each of my classes every period of every day (with the exception of Friday when the internet crashed in the district for a few hours). We have the option of "teaching" from home, but I choose to do my job from my classroom. It is going better than I thought it would, so far...

My wife is a 1st grade teacher. She is putting in 70+ hours a week (teaching and prep time) to provide meaningful instruction to her littles. It is a struggle for the parents of her students, but the students seem to be adapting to the current reality.

While both of us work from our classrooms, we really miss the students physically in our classrooms. We are fortunate that our children are in college and that we are not trying to balance the job while providing educational support for our own kids. We have much empathy and compassion for the parents who are having to do it all.

My kid started the welding program at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo yesterday. It's 3 1/2 hours away from us and we had to move him down there and into his dorm on Saturday. All his classes are online with the exception of his welding lab. Otherwise he could have stayed at home and went to school...

He did not want to take his 41 Willys down there since there is no garage to store it in, and it's not really streetable enough to take it on the highway he would have to drive to school...

So he bought himself a 1994 C4 Corvette the night before we drove down. With his OWN money that he made working at an auto-parts store.

He has a job interview with a big 4x4 company today, so I am keeping my fingers crossed!

I am really proud of my boy.

Our district is a mess. They voted in an A/B option... Cliffs

A Group is in School Monday & Tuesday
B Group is in School Thursday & Friday
C Group is 100% remote learning

The teacher will teach the class like normal, so the A group missed the material covered Thursday and Friday. The B group missed the material on Monday & Tuesday. They are supposed to self learn the days they are off.

It will fail horribly. Imagine having kids and being in this school district. Both parents can no longer work.

We had my youngest skip 5th grade so she could join her sister in 6th grade private school. My kids will be onsite and if needed the private school will do full days like normal over webcam. The class rooms were already set up with cameras and all kids get an ipad to work on so in march they just had the teachers still in the classrooms with the kids remote for everything 7:30-3:30 kids are required to be on camera besides lunch and breaks.

That is a solution that could only be reached by a school board. Across the country they embody the saying "none of us are as dumb as all of us"

this.

I specifically arranged my senior schedule to have 2 study halls first thing in the morning so I could show up and then sleep for 90 minutes.

My daughter tested positive for COVID last night. Her mom and I tested negative. I work with people who are extremely high risk and I can’t risk infecting them, so I guess I am home for 2 weeks

Man you guys were lazy in high school! I set it up so I could show up early and take 0 period at 7am, then be done with classes by lunchtime. After lunch I either went to work, or worked on projects in metal shop at the school.

Kiddos (both 6) started 1st grade last week, all online. Its been a learning curve. I feel bad for the poor teacher. Its her first year of teaching and she is having to figure out how to deal with the technology as well as teaching. The kiddos have done well with it though and its getting better. I'm actually able to get some work done while they are in class now and were only on day 6. It keeps them busy for a few hours instead of getting on each others nerves constantly.

I'm kinda curious to see what happens if we loose internet. We had a big internet outage sunday night. Is it considered an absence? Seems kinda harsh if the teacher can't even get on to teach.
