What's new

Replace my cordless collection.

I was running Dewalt 18v for a long time. The brushed ones. They started to let the smoke out, and I replaced them with 20v brushless models.

I really like the Dewalt carpentry tools. Worm drive saw, recip saw, routers, impacts, drills, they're all awesome. Dewalt lacks in the mechanic tool category, although their impacts work pretty good with socket adapters. I heard they came out with a 3/8" 20v ratchet to compete with Milwaukee, but I'm not ready to replace my m12 fuel ratchet yet (only red tool I have).

The color of the tool doesn't matter. This isn't a Chevy VS Ford type debate. All of the tools are more or less the same, but the battery system makes a difference. If you do more house style shit, I think Dewalt has a better tool spread, but if you do more mechanic style shit, Milwaukee takes the cake.

My 2c fwiw. All the brushless tools are baller, just stick with whatever battery system you like better.

Milwaukee's quality is becoming questionable as of late...Dewalt has been killing it with their new impacts. Yellow is the way to go these days. Also, the availability of yellow everywhere is much better.

I've run my Milwaukee stuff hard. I have managed to kill a couple drills. Should have warrantied them, but didn't and it's probably too late now...
I keep hoping my drill from 2004-something will die, so they'll give me a new one.

I'm cheap, and not a pro. Lifetime Service Agreement for me.

Yeah, free. And when they warranty a tool, you get the newest version. And the 18v tools from 2004 use the newest batteries, and vice versa.

Put of curiosity why do you say this? Tomorrow ill add one of my guys using an driver/nail gun/or drill as a hammer. They beat the living shit out if tools and I've had the best cordless luck so far with milfuckee. That said I have 2 dewalt table saws and a miter that are wore out for fine work and are only on constitution/rough work.

Damn! My craftsman 19.2v drill was a good one. When it died I went Red with Milwaukee V18 and I'll be honest, V18 wasn't the best.
Chucks don't last worth a shit in my experience but they're fine drills otherwise.

They've had some duds lately, the high torque impact revision failed, lots of batteries DOA, chucks failing. Seems the bean counters are playing with the designs and screwing them up. A few years ago, wouldn't even be a thought, but now I'd be iffy on where they are going.

Have dewalt stuff now. I had porter cable for about 10 years before switching. Never had issues with those (saw, drill, and a couple of other things).

I had several Milwaukee V18 tools and they didn't hold up very well. Motors, batteries, and switches failed early. I also had a corded Milwaukee drill that failed early. I switched to DeWalt several years ago and nothing has failed. I know the M18 stuff is better than the V18 but I will stick with yellow.

4.5\5in M18 paddle grinder 2 at least. Fuck corded grinders unless grindering a shit load.
3/8in extended ratchet - Love the dam thing and alot quieter then a air driven one.
1/2in impact - I dont even break out the air impact anymore
3/8in impact - works well
Circular saw - Works really even for hard wood butcher block

Drill, sawzall and small impacts are similar to dewalt units we use at work.

Hey Donk what's the go-to daown unda? I know there's some brands that are persona non grata here in the states.
Just the usual stuff tbh. Builders will typically have a box full of dewalt or makita, it's been a few years since I've been home so I'd imagine milwaukee has taken off too of late.

Personally I've fallen down the the ryobi rabbit hole for home use too. The newer one+ tools are brushless and while probably not as ultimately as good as the fuel stuff they are like 1/4-1/2 the price so imo for home use they're an excellent balance of quality and value.

Get the super sawzall, not one of the lesser versions. It has an elliptical motion that can be switched off that absolutely blows through wood. It's a mean fucker!

I did the M12 stubby impact since I ended up with some 4 and 6 AH batteries I figured I'd get a smaller tool with the same chooch. I use it to change tires so she's a certified ripper.

If you do a ratchet I'd HIGHLY recommend the high speed version. It has 20 ft lbs less chooch but I'll wind 'er up and stick it on the bolt and it'll take it right out.. The high speed has a far smaller head than the normal fuel ratchet, it's about the same as the non fuel 3/8 version.

Would it kill you to post part numbers?
We ain't got time for this shit.

Super sawzall is a bad bitch. One cordless tool with the same chooch as corded IMO.

Love this little bastard, I use this impact, the high speed ratchet and the surge driver more than anything by a landslide.

Ratchet deal comes with a free tool, speaker, grease gun or inflator.

There you can now consider yourselves spoon fed. :flipoff2:

If you’re going to go Milwaukee now is the time. They have a lot of ways for you to spend money. I’d go brushless. I’m a home owner who uses my tools rarely and ryobi has done what I need when I need it to. i don’t need arm snapping 1/2” power. Yet.

meh I have teal and I would not switch. Also have them at work with no issues from the crew.

Any tips on batteries? They seem to last about 1/4 of the time as milwaukees.

The tools seem OK, except the sawzall I just don't like. But the batteries suck, the release button is a shit design and like I said they don't last for shit.

I started buying yellow 20V/60V about four years ago for work. Biggest issue I've had was that I just had two of my 9Ah 60V batteries die on me, but they were still under warranty and DeWalt sent me two new ones when I contacted them. Once I gave them the serial numbers that was the end of the discussion, so I think there was a known issue with them. The cases on the new ones are different, so you can easily tell them apart. No idea on what was changed internally, though.

Other than that, about the only issue was my very first tools were a basic drill/driver set. I didn't really understand the brushless thing and they were brushed. So now they're at the house and I have another pair of brushless for work. There's definitely a difference.

My biggest recommendation is that whatever color you go with, set up a deal alert on SlickDeals for them. The other guys at work buy off the tool trucks, but even regular prices online are significantly lower - obviously. But then if you wait for deals you can save a heap of money. Downside is that you end up with tools you didn't know you needed because it was too good of a deal to pass up - like Ron White and the topless bar: "I didn't want to go, but I ended up going..."

Two places I've gotten some of the best deals from are Fasteners Tool Outlet and Murdoch's Ranch and Home Supply. Both are authorized dealers - the 60V batteries were bought from Murdoch's and there were no issues with the warranty. I've heard some people have had warranty issues with buying from other places online. I had another tool come in a damaged box and pieces were missing. Again, no issue, sent it back and got another one before they received the old one back. With that, keep your receipts, take a picture of them with your smart phone, or scan them or something. I scan all mine for taxes, but it's good to have them for warranties and such.

Part of my choice of yellow was other people I knew having them - so we borrow each other's stuff and it made sense to have the same line. After getting into it, I had thought I should have looked more closely at red, but from what I'm seeing here maybe I made the right choice.

The last thing I'd say is that now that Harbor Freight's Hercules tools have the 5-year warranty on tools and 3-year warranty on batteries and chargers, I'd actually consider them. I'll admit that I've only looked at them in passing, so I'd have to take some time to see if they offered what I wanted and take some time to handle the tools to see what I thought. But I wouldn't rule them out. The big benefit is that you can walk into your local store and do the exchange instead of having to ship things somewhere. They've really expanded the line in the past year and cover quite a range of options.

The new Milwaukee 1/2" impacts are garbage. (Identified by the B in the part #) They either break right out of the box or shortly thereafter. They changed some parts inside the hammer unit and the pins snap off in short order causing the guns to stop working.

Milwaukee fucked up bad changing the design....

shit
I am still dunning OG Dewalts 18V from 15(?) years ago

batteries are starting to fuss, purchased a knock off and I m still chugging along

I really like that dewalt sells adapters to put the 20v batteries on the old 18v stuff. Even if you buy 20v stuff, it's nice to not have to wipe the slate clean all at once. Especially for the oddball tools that don't get used very often.
