Recommendations for Custom SD60/14B Housings?

Rebuilding and packaging of a 10” or 12” coilover makes sense to not go that route especially for a tow rig.

What about an 8” coilover? Still have to deal with packaging and rebuild intervals, though…
Thought about an 8....but seems kind of silly for such a low travel c/o....not that a stock Ram 2500 has a lot of travel on stock suspension, just feels odd to spend the money on c/os and only get an 8" travel, ITMS.

I called ECGS about a month ago about a new SD60 housing in 79-79 dimensions. ~$2200 for bare housing with C's (i supplied). 90'ish day lead time. I'm local so shipping wasnt discussed.

Better to buy a 8" travel than cram in a 10 or 12 and only use 6" travel 90% of the time anyway
True. I'm not saying 10 or 12" is a better option...unless you can get it to at least equal up/down travel and that's a tall order if you're trying to keep stock height.

At what point does a fab 9 with SD outers become comparable in price to a custom SD60?

Well, I was wrong. I was going off memory for the cost from ECGS b/c the email was at my work addy and I couldn't access it. Just checked, in March, it was $2145 plus $515 shipping....$2660 total. Sorry for the incorrect info.

A drop out third member comparable in strength to a 14 bolt is the problem. 2k+ easy
Yeah...you pretty much have to get up into a GW 10" HP to get apples to apples....and that bumps the price considerably. LP 9" while inexpensive has too low a pinion angle IMO and I wouldn't want it in the front of my tow rig.

Nobody in their right mind would buy a custom Dana 60 in order to make a fair comparison with a lower tier Fab9 when you can have a custom 14 bolt for cheaper.

Kind of depends on what you have lying around...I've got both D60 and 14 bolt Grizzlies/Zips and 5.38 gears looking for a home....though the 5.38s aren't going in this rig, but I can see it making sense if you have a certain investments in parts (like say 35 spline 4340 or 300M inner shafts along with gears/lockers). But I agree....unless for some reason you just had to have HP....a custom 14B makes sooo much more sense than a D60.

pretty sure "right mind" is not in play when you're talking about custom housings for a tow rig. :emb:

LOL...very true. As with most vehicle mods in the US....it'd definitely be characterized as a want; not a need.

The SD60 I have is in great shape, but mounting it under my Dodge is going to be a PITA due to the casting....and yeah, I could cut it off....but for $900 (which is roughly what TTR was charging to do a new SD60 center with tubes)....to me, it's not worth the hassle.

Bruh, no one in there right mind would build a custom housing to avoid the hassle of running a grinder either would they?

While crazy rhymes with lazy...it's not the same thing.
