I turn 50 next summer. To celebrate I'm planning on heading off to do some solo car camping. Looking for some recommendations on where to go.

Details -
Time of Year: Mid/Late June
Starting Point: North Canton, OH
Duration of trip: 7-8 days
Range: Within 10 hrs or so of driving from starting point
Vehicle: 2017 F150 4wd. No lift on 33's.
Stipulations: Prefer to be camped on water (may have a canoe with me). No need for any facilities. As few people around as possible

Head north west through wisconsin and up the north shore of lake superior, highway 68 from Duluth all the way to Grand Portage. Plenty of hiking along the way. The UP is great as well beautiful area

I like the NF is Arkansas but in June it's gonna be getting hot and the skeeters might carry you off.

I'll 2nd the UP.

If you do it, do it right and go all the way. Head to the Keweenaw peninsula/Copper Harbor area. You could start at Tequendama Falls and then head to the north shore and follow it. Plenty of spots to camp and get on the water for the pictured rocks.

I was looking at the UP. I'm a bit fascinated with Lake Superior and have never seen it (largest lake by surface area in the world).
And the 2nd largest body of fresh water in the world. The UP is an amazing place. It's absolutely beautiful, and a there's a lot of history written by some tough SOB's. Nothing came easy up there.

First is in Hornby NY

Second is along the Tioga River in Tioga State forest. Ignore the Cinnamon lake in this screen shot

Lots to do in the UP. You can make it as remote as you want it to be. Tons of remote waterfalls to find in addition to being on the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

The UP is kind of tricky to plan because feature attractions are spread out. Itineraries are typically based on Superior v. Michigan shoreline or west v. east of US-41 between Escanaba and Marquette.

For a 1st timer, I'd recommend base camp at Muskallonge State Park: LINK for exploring the Superior shoreline and eastern UP attractions. It's semi-remote, but convenient to Marquette, Munising, Pictured Rocks, Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, and Sault Ste Marie.

If you want end of the Earth minimum human contact look to the Schlatter Lake area at the eastern tip of the Keewenaw peninsula. If you want practically no human contact, book a trip to Isle Royale N.P.

I would do a little UP time, then bounce over to the North Shore of Superior, up in the tip of MN. When the rest of the country is sweltering from a heat wave, those southerly winds are cooled severely by Superior and leave the highs in the 50s and 60s those days, the opposite of everywhere else.

Unfortunately Grand Marais is outside your desired distance, over 900 miles and about 15 hours.

For 7-8 days this is good advice. Colored items are top notch. And once again, there are some cool waterfalls along that route. Also could hit the east end of the Lake MI shoreline with lots of sandy beach, dune area on your way back. (no orv's allowed) Also gotta hit the Mystery Spot. :lmao:

Priest, re-visit this post with pics when you get back a year older

My family has 720 acres of wooded property in NW PA. The cabin there is nice this time of year.

This sounds nice. I would love to do this and leave all my electronics behind for a week or two.

peavy falls or michigamme resevoir in the UP. Pick a camp ground, or if you want no one around I have 80 acres 10-20 min away you could stay at.

My plan is to hopefully be without cell service or at least pretend that I am.

One of the gray spots on this map.
