Recommend a decent priced hunting rifle.

well if you suck then you suck and a larger caliber might help offset the suck factor. :flipoff2:

I have no problem shooting a elk with my gun but no probably would not recommend it to most. 270 no problem.

Ive personally seen an elk take 2 6mm bullets to the heart and stay on its feet for 10 minutes. Good barnes bullets, not factory ammo.

No suck factor about it, I think your bitch shoulder just needs to suck it up :flipoff2:

30-06 recoil is past c
On this I have to disagree. Blackbear? Sure a well placed 6.5 will be fine. But for Elk I strongly urge something in 30 caliber, 270 at the very least.

Elk are massive animals and incredibly strong. An elk can stand around quite a long while from a perfectly placed 6.5 pill.
Magnums are for people who can't shoot!:flipoff2:

You're not wrong by any stretch. 6.5 is going to be perfect for everything short of a elk. For that you'll have to be a little more choosy on your shot. I don't feel under gunned, but I'm fine with passing on a marginal shot.

I guarantee you more elk or elk sized animals have been taken with a 6.5 than a .270. I assume your familiar with the 6.5 swede? Its almost identical ballistically to the 6.5cm. Think of where its used and what they shoot with it. 6.5cm has no problem dropping elk its very popular with distance hunters out west for elk. Hell my little brother took his moose last year with a ruger 6.5cm. Ive dropped two nilgai in tx with a 6.5cm. Look up how big they are.

Yep...30-30 is extremely hard to find. I have found some online but I'm not paying $2 to $3 a round. I've got about 120 or so rounds and I'm going to setup to reload.

I really like my savage 30-30 bolt action and think reloading will be worth it. And then I can reload other calibers I have also.

If I were buying a new, it would probably be the Mossberg Patriot in .308.
I have two bolt action 30-30’s and make some fun ammo for them. One is a 101 years old so I’m gentle with it. The other is a Western Field (Savage 540) and a lot of fun.

The good news is 458 SOCOM is cheap now compared to most other ammo :)

Thoughts?
ended up getting this in the .308 flavor....plus 100 rounds...bolt seems kinda tight to the scope may add a riser to it...we have a nice free outdoor range I should be able to hit up in a few weeks to try it out!
