Redoing my PS system, PSC TC pump, RD resi, stock Saginaw box rebuilt and tapped.

Is adding any cooler better than no cooler? I have a small plate style single row cooler from my last PS system, but the ports are small and meant for hose clamps, would the flow reduction through the cooler hurt more than it helps?

Pic of cooler?
I looked at it and it's not worth reusing or even taking a picture of. I didn't want to snowball on this but I think I need to just suck it up and spend the money on the right ****.
It's on the return side so as long as the cooler lines are bigger than the pressure feed line you should be good.
Hadn't thought of that. Pressure is -6, feed is -10, and return circuit is -8 or at least the return on the res is.

Never had a problem over heating my steering with provided psc single pass cooler. And it's only 3/8 return lines to and from. Prob about 4 feet worth of 3/8, still has plenty of return flow.

I'm sure fin and plate coolers have a bit more pressure drop across them. But they are usually more efficient than the straight through aluminum fin coolers.

I did a 180 from cheap ass and probably overdid it - ordered this

I did similar on mine:

I used the aux port on the res for a 1/8”not temp sensor, I have it hooked up to a gauge, but I never monitored my steering fluid temp before, so I can’t tell you how much the cooler helped.

Did you add any filtration at all?

I used one of these for the low pressure side, figuring I’d run it for a bit and then pull it, just in case I screwed up and missed shavings or something somehow.

I have one on my transmission lines (ripped out all the hard line and converted to braided line and AN fittings) also, just for fun.

Old-ish thread.. but I’ll leave this here..

I’m not a fan of the plate or sandwich style coolers.. I seen plenty of failures in rough conditions.. even the small ones have probably 20 feet or more of seams.. though they are probably more efficient than tube and fin.

Also have had issues if the cooler is mounted too high in the chassis.. I like to have the resi be the highest point of the whole system.. I’ve had problems with the lines draining down and overflowing the resivoir
