What's new

Precision 7mm-08

Thanks. I rarely drop bait.

I decided to go dedicated long rang. Grabbed a ‘starter’ gun this morning. REM 700 magpul enhanced in creedmoor.
Nice! Any thoughts on optics yet? Are you going to shoot factory ammo or reload for it?

Wanna buy some factory ammo??:flipoff2:

My friend is a pretty serious long range guy and ffl. He has a few scopes he’s going to show me. Nice optics for 500-1000 yards. The scopes will be nicer than the gun.

He will reload some for me.

I do need ammo. What ya got

I have 200 rounds of Federal Gold Metal Match loaded with 140 grain Berger Hybrids.

He doesn’t care and your point won’t resonate. I stop arguing with the ultra light round on game guys long ago. Waste of time.

.243 is a ladies and elderly round just enough for whitetail, nothing more.

I use a 115 partition out of the 25-06. Works just fine. I know a hell of a lot of people that have never used anything other than their 270.

I also know a lot of people that lost elk after they shot them with a 300 or 338.

Plug a hole in the lungs, don't aim for the giant plate of a shoulder, and they fall down quickly.

Went with a Vortec Diamondback Tactical scope 4-16, 44mm in mils. Put a Precision Armament brake on it, Hypertap® Muzzle Brake.

We have 5" of snow but I might shoot it soon, its ready to go and I am learning what the knobs on the scope do.

If you can, run a box test and a tall target test to make sure it tracks. I have run it on my Vortex HD II, and Viper PST II and they both track, but I don't know about the lower cost optics from Vortex.

I have a tikka SS 7mm-08, nice little hunting rig. I was hoping to shoot Hornady 150 gr ELD's, but never manage a good load. With 140gr Accubond and varget it's a sweet shooter, well below 1" . I'm running a SS 5-15x42 on it, but I think I'm going to put a nighforce SHV 3-10 since it's smaller and better glass. That thin barrel gets hot quick, so it's not target rig.

For long range I'd probably want to figure out those 150gr ELD's. I think I would put in a longer bolt stop and use 3.4" magazine so I could load them long. That gets you closer to the lands and more powder space. Those little cases don't have much space, most of my loads are compressed or 100% with the 140gr.

I looked up what they were and will do

I picked this particular scope because a friend has 6 of them on different precision rifles. It’s his go to cheepo. His other scopes are $$$$$ but he likes these for his less high end stuff, it’s just not as nice glass and magnification.

This is my entry level gun so I figured if I get into shooting more I’ll be building nicer guns

Which caliber Creedmoor did you go with?

I am running factory Hornady 6 Creedmoor 108 ELDM ammo and don't feel I am at any disadvantage over hand loads. It shoots absolutely amazing in my rifle.

Probably the best value in long range scopes now is the Leupold Mark 5 HD with the PR2 reticle. I have a 5-25 and a 7-35 now and love them. I'll be getting another 7-35 shortly.

6.5. I would appreciate your thoughts in my other thread on this new disaster.

Agree. I have a 7-35x with the CCH, but will be getting the PR2 on the next one.

Guy I shot with at Cowtown had an ATACR and we both looked through them set at 25x, and he thought the Mark 5 had better light transmission. I could tell a slight difference, but I'd be fine with either.

I can buy a lot of MK5s and Hawkins rings at my price for what a single ATACR costs....

Yeah, I got my MK5 and Leupold MK4 rings for under $2k.

How does the MK5 do with mirage? Currently I shoot a Kahles K624i and in the summer targets past 800 get so bad it can be hard to make out the target shape. I end up loosing a lot of points on longer range stuff because of this. Most of the top guys around here use Tangents.

Good question. I haven't compared it to my Razor, but usually just dial down if the mirage is bad, which it is over half the year.
