Picking a Vehicle for my 18 Yr Old Son

This guys advice is gold. He traverses agate street with no fear in the winter lol. During my stint up in houghton I drove a m715 to class and back.

we don't have plow trucks in colorado. I lived in the midwest and the second snow would start falling, trucks would get running. Here, we just wait for the sun to melt everything.

Cheap 80s pickup

Or cheap 70s pickup

I'd say cheap 90s pickup but those aren't always cheap

Did I mention you should get something cheap? :flipoff2:

3rd Gen 4runner with the 3.4

can find em all day on cl. And 10k will get you a nice one

Whatever he can afford, how much has he saved from working?

he is 18 why are you involved?

This IBB, we get to challenge everyone’s parenting skills.

I say to each their own.

My grandfather set every one of his kid's up with a running vehicle so they to get to/from school/work. They're weren't new or expensive, but they all ran fine. Until Dad put a four barrel in his Firebird and ended up having to use the saw to cut a hole in the hood.

Mid 90's Grand CherOkee. Large slow 4x4 with good parts availability and easy to work on. Great to wreck also. Bonus that it gets shitty mileage and will keep him from going too far. You could probably get three of them for 10K.

This. those mid 90's Cherokees run forever.

I tried to get my son (who just turned 18) to take our beater Cherokee with him to college in SLO..... but he ended up buying himself a car that he wanted. (I had to spot him $400, but he paid for the majority of it.) It is actually the 2nd vehicle that he bought with his own $$. Lets just say that what he bought is not the best choice for a 18 year old kid in San Luis Obispo. :homer:

My father bought my first truck. 3 years later I bought my own and gave it to my sibling who drove it for another 4 years. It's now sitting in the barn.

For the past 5 years my dad was driving my vehicles and using my trailers. I bought back his first truck and gave it to him for his 60th birthday. One of the only times in my life I saw him get choked up.

Dont always have to be a douchebag hardass.

LOL, had to google it. No.

Wait wait wait...

I think he has a point. It checks all your boxes and then some.

cheap - check
<100000 miles - check
AWD - check
only goes 55 mph - he can't get in trouble
can haul a load, push a plow - he can make his own money
heavy truck - safer in a crash
reliability - well, 6 out of 7 ain't bad:flipoff2:

Single cab, Manual 4x4 Ranger.

Perfect starter vehicle for anyone. The single cab keeps them from fitting more than 3-4 people in it and the manual keeps their friends from driving as well as generally keeps distractions down ( I know most of us can drive, drink and eat while talking on a phone and shifting but that takes time to learn :lmao:)

Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ are AWD (fulltime 4x4 option) and cheap and good.

Yes, and also 96-01 V8 Explorer... if you can find one its a 500k mile vehicle that never needs anything passed consumables. Unfortunately the only ones I see around here are methed out with trash bag windows and covered with 5 finger deathpunch stickers.

You didn't go to HS with me. Seen 5 people in a first gen Fiero more than once.

Ive fit 8 into an extended cab ranger. I know whats possible, but people usually don't want a repeat after experiencing that. :flipoff2:

We had 14 in the Grand Marquis hitting the speed bumps in the school parking lot. We had one in the trunk, but the scissor jack did quite the number on him.

I think I got 8 into a early bronco (this was before they were $50k for a rusty frame)

my neighbors wife died in the middle of a snow storm, it took 3 days before they got the road plowed to get her. i didn't have the heart to ask him if he chucked her out on the porch. if i lived at my place year round i would damn sure have my own plow truck. apparently no one in my valley does.

I had 4 in my 83 Ranger reg cab with buckets...

And I was the only guy (3 girls)\ in an Escort EXP a few times....

Get him the new Trans Am Bandit. He'll be getting so much pussy he won't have time to drive.

Tell him to man the fuck up and earn his own car. Or buy him a $500 shit box. I’d say early 90s f150. Then tell him to learn how to fix his own shit. Unless of course your son is actually a daughter in which case the advice changes and your budget is to low.
