My son recently got his drivers license and we need to find him his first vehicle. We have a twisty 20 mile 2 lane highway to drive to before we seen anything flat and will often see snow so AWD at a minimum is required with a budget of $10K <100,000 miles or so.
I've been gravitating to the Toyota Rav 4 and Honda Pilot for their perceived reliability. It seems they are plentiful in this price range for the 2007 to 2011 models.

Anyone know anything about reliability of these years or can you think of anything else I should be looking for. I'm also seeing a ton of Subaru's in this price range but I don't know shit about them. We don't really care to spend time working on this, it's really only to get him to and from work not a "project".

Here are a few close buy-

Thanks but we are moving up Hwy 67 quiet a ways out of Sedalia so AWD is a requirement.

RAV4, CRV or crosstrek.

Subaru for safety since hes gonna wreck it.

XJ/ZJ/WJ for cheap parts since hes gonna wreck it.

Oldest boys last year, both occupants walked away with scratches and a bullshit (IMO) story on how it happened. I was glad they were in the Subi.

If he’s 18 and just getting his DL now sounds like he’s gonna crash the first one you buy him. I second a cheap awd lezbaru. My little sister piled into a guy who pulled out infront of her going 65 and she walked away. The Lezbos cars are good in a crash.

Toyota 4cyl 2008 and older have head issues. You'll want 09+ rav4.

Also, this is depressing. Import crossover thingy for a 18 y/o boy. Did he also come out of the closet?

The wagons are super reliable too. Only things that break are hymens and condoms.

Honda or Toyota for reliability. Fuck a Subaru. We fix so many goddamn Subarus.

I say Volvo XC70 for safety. Shut the door in any Asian car then a Volvo. I'm driving one now for the very reason of giving it to my kid when he hits 16. Just find one with good maintenance history.

1994 Lincoln Towncar with snow tires for winter and a couple hundred pounds of sand in the trunk. :flipoff2:

Mid 90's Grand CherOkee. Large slow 4x4 with good parts availability and easy to work on. Great to wreck also. Bonus that it gets shitty mileage and will keep him from going too far. You could probably get three of them for 10K.

And a welder diff!

My kids are prolly gonna get something like this for their first car. However they are in training now how to handle a vehicle in the snow. The gokarts with plastic on the wheels make a great teaching tool. It’s amazing how quick the little fuckers pick shit like this up. My 6yo will be drifting in control as he is racing around our track.

Because an 18 year old in a 20 year old Subie wagon gets all the chicks. :flipoff2:

One ton regular cab, 4x4.

Lol he’s 18, he’s lucky that daddy’s buying him one. My kids will get a pos at 16 and after that they are on their own. You want flashy you buy it yourself.

Yea, a pos one ton regular cab. :flipoff2:

Never mentioned anything about flashy. Cut fenders, 35s, and exhaust dumped out the side. :D

Not it isn't. Any FWD shitbox on winterforces will be fine, expecially for a fawking newb who is old enough they should be buying their own vehicle.

irate knows I love the P2 platform.

check the PCV, make sure the timing belt gets done, check the haldex angle gear and change the fluid and filter in the active pinion box that i forget the name of right now.

enjoy couch on wheels that's large enough for activities in the back.

I mean, jeremey Clarkson scientifically proved a turbo volvo wagon was the perfet car for a teenager in high school.

with science.

An eighteen-year-old should be capable of picking their own vehicle. Now if they ask for an opinion...

This guys advice is gold. He traverses agate street with no fear in the winter lol. During my stint up in houghton I drove a m715 to class and back.
