Pellet smoker?

I had a Green Mountain Grill meltdown mid-day when I wasn’t even using it. We suspect that it was a lingering back-burn from “grilling/searing” steaks the night before
When I first got my b380x I ran it high then straight to off. Apparently that will cause issues with back burning. Have to go from high to low then off.

That’s exactly it, they can “grill,” but you need to beware. I wound up getting a gas grill for the quick 20 minute cooks.

I’ve tried two dedicated “smokers” since, one gas, one electric. The gas developed a burner issue which covered the meat in creosote. The electric has worked great, but shares another issue that the gas smoker also had; cleanup.

I’ll be adding another pellet “grill,” mostly for smoking duties, while losing some of the tedious cleanup of the dedicated units.

Yes. You can.
I can, at least on my equipment.
Between my GMg, and my stick burner, big smoke flavor difference, I’ve done three butts on my GMG, and I cleaned out my stick burner and threw on a butt, big difference.

Just under 19lb of pork butt.

Running it at 250 for dinner tomorrow.

Last one I wrapped in butcher paper but didn’t get as good of bark as I usually do. Probably won’t wrap these.

You’ll never do a blind test and be able to say what’s from a pellet.

Bullshit, you can 100% tell the difference. Even my Traeger rep acknowledges that pellet is not the same as charcoal/wood. Is it a better way into outdoor slow cooking for people who value their time, want something easy, or looking for more flexibility, absolutely. But it's not the same and you can absolutely still taste a difference blind.

I have to agree. Maybe someday I will have the time to babysit a stick burner but for now the rec tec is perfect.

This is key…..
because on the other hand… I’d cook outdoors more often if I owned a pellet stove!!!!
I just can’t justify the cost when I look at my $50.00 Weber Kettle!!!!!!

Need pics of the awesome smoker itself because I don’t even know what I’m looking at. I’m in the market but some of the terms related to a smoker don’t have a visual meaning to me. Like offset dual split or side by side. WTF does that mean.

This has cut my babysitting time on just about any cook significantly.
It will alert me when the smoker drops below a set temp, then I come add more charcoal or turn the fan on.
Can’t recommend it enough, the app is great.

It’s like getting into Wheelin….. just go buy something you think will work…. Then learn what you need or want and go from there!!!!
You can grab a bbq on the side of the road here, that someone thinks is junk and cobble that fkr together however you want for free….
Or spend thousands on blinged out versions!!!!

That's why I threw up the Masterbuilt Gravity Series as an option for those looking to get into it. Almost as convenient as a pellet grill, but more versatile.

Weber + Fireboard + Pit Viper fan + slow n sear
This is the way!

Then add volcano for wings and a rack for large cooks.

I have the weber premium deluxe and get coals ready in 10 mins.

I’m convinced this is the best possible combo outside a traditional offset or reverse offset.

I have a WSM for larger cooks which holds 225 stupidly easy; basically designed from ground up just for that.

Weber kettle is really all you need. Its only major detractor that I can think of is the quantity you can cook on it. Ring it with charcoal and wood chunks, light one end, and walk away. It’ll maintain temp all day with minimal babysitting.

If I buy another grill, it’ll be a kettle.

I prefer wood/charcoal smokers, but I did buy a pitboss vertical smoker in December. Was onsale at coastal, so I bought it, assembled it. Then smoked some stuff that night. I find it's more convenient during the week to use, and a tad cheaper.

Yes there is a difference in flavor, but I'm happy with it.

I still want a big ass smoke trailer, but that's a someday item.

You are the perfect example of someone who needs a pellet smoker. Im not being derisive. Its the perfect type of smoker for someone who doesnt know shit about smoking meat.

Most people cant.

No offense taken. I have never smoked before. 42 year old beginner with no chip on my shoulder. I need it to be easy because I don’t have time to babysit a smoker all day. I need to be able to get it set and have it be done at the end of the day after working on race cars all day. Anybody can make fun if they want but I’m not to proud to run pellets.

Cooked for 15hrs. Resting in a cooler for dinner.

Time is the deal. I have a cheap vertical stick burner that I haven’t used in 9 years since we got pregnant with our first kid. I only currently use my 90’s webber BBQ if its just for the wife and myself during the week. Weekend or people over I also fire off a charcoal bbq as well. I keep looking at a pellet smoker as it is the easy button. But I have way too much alder at my place to give up stick burning.

This is why I like my pit boss electric pellet. I can set it and go work on shit with an alarm set on my phone when it should be done. I’ve had UDS and a wood side box. I don’t want to spend the time babysitting them anymore.

I wish one of the quality brands would make a gravity feed charcoal cooker. The masterbuilt and charbroil and just so cheaply made with thin steel. I love the idea though.

I've got a traeger that was super cheap on HD clearance ($90). It was still a pita, the monkeys at HD didnt assemble it right and after several hours dealing with traegers indian support people some dude on reddit told me how to fix it in 5 minutes.

Pellet has it place. If I want to just do an easy cook and not deal with adjusting temps its the winner. Can do overnight smokes without having to wake up and adjust or just toss stuff on while I'm working and let it go. Also great as an outdoor oven - i'll do steaks or burgers on the egg and toss some mac and cheese and veggies on the pellet. Keeps all my cooking outside and don't have to clean the kitchen.

If I was paying full price I'd get a rectec. They seem to make a quality product and are a local company. The more I see Traegers "American" BS while its full of crap china components and the support is clearly overseas the more it annoys me about that fake ass company.

PitBoss people.

I’m just one guy, a bachelor not really cooking for anyone but me. I don’t need a huge smoker. What model is gonna be a good steak smoker? I like tender red meat, rarer steaks are my favorite. My little brother smoked meatloaf for 9 hours a while back and it was good stuff.

Check out the b380x. It’s from recteq, quality is awesome. Small enough to do burgers and quick meals but it can still do long cooks.

They claim 1,000*f so it can do steaks and whatever. But still can do low and slow. It’s small enough to move around easily. I’ve done 27 cooks and ran it for over 72hours of cooking so far. According to the app.

I ordered it on Christmas and got it before new years. Zero complaints so far.

This is the one I have

I got it at coastal. They had the wrong version labeled. Think it was only $360-$380

I have used it to smoke some tomahawk steaks that were 2 1/4"-2 1/2" thick. Ran them for 1-2hrs at low and slow. Then bumped it up to max. To Finish them off. To 125°F internal. They were tender and juicy.

What about one of these? I saw one at Walmart this morning.

That looks like a pretty cheap entry into seeing if smoking food is for someone or not. Decent enough size to do some ribs, with other items and looks to do 500°. So should do a steak alright. Obviously your not searing a steak to perfection in a couple minutes.
