What's new

Old CNC milling machines, need info please.

Last old mill i worked on was a fanuc 3m mori seiki mv45. Gotta love that bubble memory!
LOL, we just sold off the last MV 45 and 55 we had. They were solid machines, but the controllers were super slow and as noted , limited on memory. also, 3500 and 4500 spindle speeds blow.

Fadal's are giant pieces of shit. The pre GL buyout ones with weldment frames aren't worth scrap prices. 97ish is when the change over was.
Guess I better go scrap mine, and give back all the money I've made with it. I won't claim it to be the best machine ever, but for the work I do, it beats the hell out of my manual mill.

If you have not worked on other machines they are probably OK. They have a cult following for some reason I can't understand. If I'm buying a mill, there still needs to be factory support for it, not interested in scrounging up support and parts from fellow enthusiasts.

If you like your Fadal, you'd probably love a Hurco....... We have one of those sitting unused in the shop right now, could probably make you a deal on it.......

Where are you located? And yeah, I'm a hobby guy turned small side job/ machine shop. Fits my needs/ budget perfect. If I was larger, had bigger contracts, I'd have something else.

Not a cult but very few machines have all the drawings listed online or easy to get parts without going thru factory outlets. Look how HAAS has fucked over the earlier machines by forcing control upgrade instead of allowing boards to be repaired. Certain machines fill a niche market for starting out versus speeding a fortune to start out. Talked to a few people that purchased new machine but had to liquidate everything when their business didnt take off right away. Most can afford a Fadal on their day job to get a business started.

Hell at Remington I saw Mori, Bridgeport and other companies have issues with the machines and it took holding back final payment for them to send tech out to fix new machines.

Is this a better deal? I have been looking for the same think.
The 4th axis is worth $3-4k alone. Assuming not clapped out, that machine would sell fro $15k+ on the FB groups I'm on.

I might actually be interested in that. The newer controls are much nicer to work on.

Seriously, what other industry is running on 20+ year old computers? That was one of the main issues with the Mori's we replaced. Mechanically they were good, want to do dynamic milling? Surfacing? Fugedaboutit...... 16K of ram.............

Dont get me wrong, I love the new Haas control on my TL lathe but being forced to spend 20k+ for a new controller versus 1-4k board would piss me off. Forced upgrades never make people happy. I will probably upgrading the Fadal to a Haas or another new machine once I have earned more cash on the machine in a few years.

Dam 16k is low memory, even my fadal as 422k but 95 percent of the time I drip feed at 115k board rate which holds up for the 3d Profile I do. But I no longer work in high volume manufacturing anymore where seconds count per part.

Dam 16k is low memory,
Bubble memory was expensive back then. The original invoice.

Let's do some fun math on the memory upgrades.

128k/8,200$
So extrapolating this out,
1mb/32,800
1gb/32,800,000
The 64gb micro sd card in my phone?
64gb/2.099B$

And that's 1984 dollars. Adjusted for inflation would be just over 5.5B in today's dollars.
