OHV Advocacy Organizations Unite for Legacy Memorial Ride Promoting Off-Highway Vehicle Safety
Monday, 14 October 2024

On October 19, 2024, Megan’s Legacy Annual Memorial Ride for Offroad Safety Awareness will be held to honor the memory of Megan Marie Lopez at Ocotillo Wells SVRA. Megan lost her life in an OHV (Off-Highways Vehicle) collision at Ocotillo Wells in 2022. Megan left a beautiful legacy through her joyful spirit, enthusiasm for adventure, and unique ability to make everyone she knew feel loved and cared for. The real tragedy of the accident that took her life is that the circumstances of the incident were entirely preventable by standard OHV safety practices. As longstanding advocates for OHV safety, American Sand Association (ASA), California Four Wheel Drive Association (Cal4Wheel), and California Off-Road Vehicle Association (CORVA) join the Lopez family to promote the annual Megan’s Legacy Memorial Ride for OHV Safety to raise awareness of OHV safety practices. This ride will bring together OHV enthusiasts from throughout California to celebrate a shared passion for motorized recreation while emphasizing the importance of safety on the trails.

The Megan’s Legacy Memorial Ride will be a day-long event filled with exciting activities, including guided rides and safety sessions. Founded in 2000, 1959, and 1969 respectively, ASA, Cal4Wheel, and CORVA have collectively invested over 140 years into advocacy for OHV safety and trail stewardship. OHV recreation is growing more popular each year, and with that growth comes the responsibility to ensure that all participants are able to ride safely. Dave Kuskie, Executive Director for ASA, shares that “this event is about honoring the memory of Megan Lopez, and supporting her family’s efforts to promote safety while educating new generations of riders on the importance of riding responsibly.”

Megan’s Legacy Memorial Ride is open to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced riders. Participants will have the opportunity to explore some of the most scenic off-road trails in Ocotillo Wells, while guided rides will emphasize techniques for safe and responsible riding. There is no cost to attend, all are welcome to join in.
