Np208 used for a doubler

More of a question but why doesn't anyone make a planetary doubler using the 208 guts? Only real reason I'm asking is a coworker just threw a good working np208D in the metal scrape bin. I know they have 241,231 and other new process doublers but I've never come across the "208" doubler. Can the IBB crew fill me in on why no one ever did it or if it was a thing back in the day...

The other cases are much more common around here.

I don't know for sure but I think the 208 have weaker 3 gear planetary vs the 6 of the newer cases.

Maybe because the 208's are scrap compared to the 205.

203's getting scarce ehh..

I had one given to me like 25 years ago but didnt know they would be popular using a part of it.

And things of that nature become rare as they aren't made anymore and with passing time fall into oblivion.

My wisdom for the week, no charge.

I'm talking about using the guts for a range box. Not the 208 as the final transfercase.

203 are still out there but this was mostly a question out of curiosity. I'm not building a doubler anytime soon.

The connection between the two is weak from the designs I've seen, but ok then back to the 208 how would you contain the gears ?

The design aspect as spoken about earlier is faulty as well 3 versus 6 gears, no contest.

208 are all torington brg. Everything else is bb inputs.
I'd imagine that the versatility (spline choice) and stronger 6 pinion planetary.

208 will definitely fade away.

All this shit.

The 208 simply isn't as good as the later stuff. Between case strength, oiling problems and weaker planetary assemblies designed for lower power engines they just don't compare to the newer stuff that got designed to rectify those deficiencies.

They're like the 1950s wedge combustion chamber of transfer cases. They represented a slight improvement in their day but don't bring enough to the table to be worth using over later designs.

Sure you could use one as the basis for a doubler, but why would you when there's so much better shit out there.

My dad has an NP208F sitting in the back yard he was thinking about cutting the case on and adapting it to a 205 as an underdrive.

My understanding is that the 208 is aluminum and all of the stronger BW cases that came after were magnesium alloy, correct?

1345 is aluminum, 1356 is magnesium

Was a thread on the old site of a 1345 double made without cutting the output shaft at all. The "doubler" was the length of a full transfer case, but it worked

The 1345 makes up for it by not having a piece of shit pump though.

That was a 1356.

The 1345 has three different splines. Normal 31 Ford on the input and IDK what on the outputs but I just know that my 31spl Ford shit sure doesn't fit on either of the 1345 output shafts I have lying around.

1356 is 31 on the input, 31 on the rear output and IDK what on the front output, I don't have one around to look at.

You're right. I usually get them backwards
