What's new

New start, what say ye?

Telecommunications..... tower work..... I'm loving it. And for most part fits your criteria... I'm sure you could find. Company for overseas/ working abroad..:smokin:

I'm listening... who's in this bidness? Where do I chuck my emails to?

Seriously, I'm 51 and I can climb a tower better than most mutherfukkers, all goddamn day. But I I need to know who to talk to. That's the whole point of my sob story thread

I would enjoy that, its about 10 degrees of latitude north of me now. I might look into that.
I think I'd be more interested in a contractor working out of there rather than a permanent gig though.
Teck is Canadian so that might help you get a foot in the door. They have a contractor camp that just operates in the summer and the blasting or at least the chemical side of it is contractors but the "lab" is on site obviously. They're also trying to go underground with two shafts about 15 miles away if everything is approved so that would probably be some really cool temporary work.

Checked out their site. Not the thing I was looking for, they have some interesting stuff going on.

Thanks for that

Now I'm looking at different stuff. I'm being led astray

Gear was meant as pace of work that you can properly preform the task. No loafers.
Not everyone can grind at an efficient rate of production.
All I can say is that, nothing happens fast in nuclear. Nothing. If you can’t keep up in nuclear “gear”, you ain’t gonna be able to hang anywhere.

Look into SGS for metallurgy work. Redpath is Canadian based but operate worldwide. Apex does consulting work, think they are out of Edmonton or Calgary. Lots of contract/consulting work in mining. Metso is worldwide.

I take contracts all over the US whenever i want work through a traveling tradesmen staffing agency, Most of them are midwest-east coast but it pays okay for what it is. paid weekly + per diem and mileage to/from your home location. contracts for my trade are 6mo at a time typically but i think they have shorter ones for other trades, not really sure.

Check out sailing and other crew jobs. You get paid to travel. It's not a ton of money but you could make a bit in short time as you develop skills. See the world on somebody else's dime.

Check out companies like MasTec Cell Tower Construction and Maintenance | MasTec
General Dynamics General Dynamics | Home
GD has a ton of different companies

I've been in and out of the cell tower business for years. It's what I'd do if I didn't have a young family.

Find a larger company working on power generation. I did it for a year, but it was a smaller company, therefore more regional to northern New England, although there were exceptions to that.

On those job site you'd use all the skills you listed. Was a fun adventure, just not as rewarding as I'd hoped

Yep, everywhere.
I looked into working for them a few years back, seemed like a decent company at the time.
I see a couple of their pickups at work once in a while. I never looked into what they do.
Someone asked me where "channel 2" was the other day.
Huh?

Well... they were looking for Worley which was CH2M Hill years ago.... aka "ch2"... channel 2. They were bought out by Jacobs and then bought out by Worley

To the guy looking for work, how about NDT? That's sort of in line with running microscopes

Not to put it down, or seem like I feel I'm above it or something.... but I'm kind of overqualified for NDT.

All good suggestions though. The Irate has been delivering. I'm glad I threw this thread on here.

After the warranty was up on our 2 GE 7FA and D11 turbines (at a power plant that I did 10 long years at), we used the following companies for major overhauls or consulting:

I believe the factory GE service is under Ahlstom Power now, but don't quote me on that... and it could have changed again.

 Good job figuring out that Davinci Code nonsense!

As for your question about Jira issue types, I think they can be super helpful in organizing projects and keeping track of tasks. My experience is that having clear definitions for different types of issues—like bugs, features, and tasks—can really streamline the workflow.
Do you like gladiator movies?

This would be my route. Boat moving like Camo has been doing looks fairly tolerable.

If you want to disappear for months at a time and see the world poke around on this site. When I got out of the Navy in 91 I considered it.

They make bank. A bunch of them were going out for a few months then living like kings in the Phillapenes.

wayupnorth what did you ever end up going with?

Gonna stay where I'm at for a bit. The smart move would be to give it a couple more years for the old pension. Then I can seriously make a move.

I was feeling pretty restless when I originally posted and now with a little time to think I realize I should be smarter about it.

I'm still going to make a move but not throw the baby out with the bathwater as it were.

I've been talking to a few guys about jobs over in the UAE and that's looking pretty interesting.

if you are interested, i have a contact in the commercial swimming pool construction and renovation business that is likely looking for people. they work coast to coast in Canada, and then some in the Carribean. They build the pools (typically a stainless steel pool shell and structure) and then do all of the onsite mechanical room filtration, heating, and chemical feed systems. big projects last about a year. They need some skilled technical people...Send me a PM if you are interested.

Another option if you're handy in the trades, go to any area known for high end VRBO/AIRBNB activity, particularly areas out of the country and/or ones that have been recently affected by storms. You can absolutely name your price on your work and you'll never have a shortage of it. The wealthy homeowners pay a premium to have repairs done and keep the cash flowing on their rentals. Every owner I've ever spoken to with a home or rental in an area like I described has said the same thing. If you're handy in the trades, reliable and will show up sober you'll never be out of a job and can live well in beautiful vacation spots.

You should try and get into working for a contractor doing power plant outages. Especially nuclear. Great money. 30-60 day gigs then off to the next one.
Yup. Got a buddy that works for Milwaukee, Dewalt, Hitachi, or Ryobi or some group that make power tools to. The do substation refits, he bounces around every couple months with a few weeks of in between. Pays good, travels the world and gets away from the wife and adult kids that cant seem to leave the house for a couple months at a time.

Chevron Pascagoula refinery, AMNS (steel mill) in Calvert, AL and there's a new Novelis plant being built in Bay Minette, AL.

I sold a lot of equipment to pool contractors through the decades. I’d visit their job sites and or while visiting other contractors building homes see new pools going in same time. I can tell you that this is not a glamorous job to have imo. To each his own tho.
