What's new

New Beetle experts step in: how do I identify which TDI in 2001 beetle?

Good stuff! If you get time, could you do a build thread? I have thought about a tdi double cab as a do everything truck many times.
I will try when I start stage 2 of this build which should be beginning of next year. 450+hp compound turbo, ZF 8hp70 8 speed transmission and a 3.8 Atlas.

I see your making an adapter to the 8hp, is the starter location set in stone?
Pretty much. Needs to be high enough to clear the engine mount and also not interfere with the bellhousing mounting bolts and the dowel pin. Very limited on where it can go.

Waaaaaat?

That’s gay.

What if you didn’t need a typical starter?

1st gen Malibu hybrid alternator starter motor.

Turbo clearance would be nice. Probably not an issue for you though with your turbo setup. I had to get a clockable Toyota starter to get it off the turbo.

Why would you want to buy this ugly as fuck piece of shit abomination of a vehicle?
How to show you didn't read more than the first sentence of the first post without saying TLDR:shaking:

Beetle = drivetrain donor.
No. This would be very difficult.
That is unfortunate about the transmission. Are there any beef up methods?

Not that I'm aware of. Lots of beefy options with manuals though.

The other option would be find an 04-05 Jetta or Golf. BEW engine. These came with Jatco Japanese auto trannies which are pretty solid.

TDIClub forum is the best place to search for TDI info.

In a light car, the manual trans is just fine. The main thing to watch out for is sloppy linkage. They will not fully engage 5th and wear out the gear.

The beetle I'm looking at is automatic:homer: It sounds like automatic could be problematic. I don't have a manual... not sure the project is worth the extra money to track down all the parts to get a manual into it:emb:

2001? .....they stopped making VW beetles in 1979.
VW nomenclature says bugs were dino age through 1979 and when they reintroduced a coat rider, they called it beetle:homer:

Yes, the autos suck. They have little plastic gears in them that disintegrate. It makes for a nice supply of cheap low mileage engines. I got mine out of an 01 jetta with 118k, blown trans. If you were closer I'd give you the 5 speed out of the Beetle in the yard.

That is kind of a bummer about potentially no upgrades. Off top of your head, is it 'trivial' to swap to a manual? My concern is whether body is setup for the pedals/master and shifter? Require tune?

The beetle is "perfect" for complete front sub-assembly into my civic in a 'wide track' theory. I need front wheel drive.

I'll take a look at TDIClub. I'm a bit concerned over 'purist' type there.

It's the "12 valve" of TDI swaps. I would skip the auto though. Only auto worth swapping is the later DSG which is doable with a ALH. Look for something with a 5 speed.

I daily a double cab Tacoma with a CJAA common rail out of a 2012 Jetta. Those would have the DSG with them. Better engine in my opinion but harder to swap. They can make way more power cheaper. I'm around 220hp/400ftlbs with a bigger turbo and a tune.
I own a 2014 Jetta CJAA, and you're giving me terrible/ amazing ideas for my JKU.
Just stalked through your IG page- Is your swap standalone, or did you somehow integrate the Toyota dash with the VW dash?
Amazing build by the way.

Pretty easy swap, no tuning needed. You can even get a 6 speed or AWD trans out of other vdubs.

No , Dems aint real vw beetles wit da mota in da rear, knowmysayin :mr-t:
The last type 1 rolled off the line in 2003. Just because our dickhead government didn't allow them to be sold after 79 here doesn't mean they stopped production elsewhere. You can now legally import an 03 T1 from Mexico as its over 20 years old.
