My Daughter's Academy adventures

I have. I have told her not to be alone with any dudes, keep control of her drinks, and trust her gut. And of course, call me if anything ever happens. I'll happily go to jail.


Good on you. Many of the stories I've heard, the woman did nothing "wrong" and was still assaulted. You'd think it wouldn't happen at someplace like a service academy, but people are still people :mad3:
 
And as a backup, my pops (ex-prison guard/ranger/wrestling coach (took a lot of kids to state) has been showing her and coaching her on stopping and disabling techniques as much as he can. Hopefully it never comes to that, but she's not a meek victim.
 
Well, it's reporting day. A little different than my boot camp experience years ago
We flew in last night, had a meet and greet with the families, Sloane and I enjoyed a nice sushi dinner, and toured the campus. We were able to watch the fireworks light up the New Jersey coastline for at least an hour from the pier. The academy is situated right on the water and is absolutely beautiful. This morning we reported in and she had the jitters pretty bad, but I completely understand. I wasn't ready to let my little girl go just yet. I tried to give her a last "Out" if she wanted it, and she told me, No, dad, I'm doing this. Through the gate we went, and shortly thereafter she was in admitting and I won't see her again until parents weekend in September.

For us ignorant folks, what's the end game of the merchant marine academy? Captains license?, allowed to pilot .gov ships :confused: .

It provides a college degree, either in marine engineering, marine business and administration or other associated disciplines, commission as a US Navy reserve officer for 7 years if stayinga merchant mariner (Or 5 year officers term if commissioned in any branch as active service), and unlimited coast guard pilots license (can drive heavy freighters or cruise ships, including all smaller classes).

Everyone asks. It's the service Academy that can commission into any branch, provides more sea based ship training than the Naval Academy, and if staying a mariner, starting salary is roughly 100-140k per year as a 3rd class seaman or engineer (depending on degree path) it's honestly one of the coolest programs I had never heard of.

I had no idea they could be commissioned into the Navy after completing the academy :homer: . I was thinking freighter or cargo ship captain. That sounds like a good deal. I know the river pilots get paid pretty well navigating ships into the Columbia river, but you have board in the ocean in some pretty rough seas :eek:.
 
The funny thing is, they don't have to commission as anything Naval related, many choose this path because they want to become pilots. Every service has to carry open slots for merchant marine officers in their pilot programs. It's so weird in that way. There's more doors open here than any of the other academies and no one knows about it.

The only downfall is they don't get paid full time while attending like the other academies. Everything is fully funded, and you basically only have to pay for uniforms.

But plebes only get paid during their sea years (they spend 1-2 summers at sea learning their trades hands on).

They also visit an average of 18-36 countries during their time at the academy.
 
Definitely a different experience than I had. The academy uploads pictures daily (I still have to search a bit to find her out of 303 kids) but I get to see daily updates so that's pretty cool. They did hand to hand combatives today, M9 pistol, M16 rifle, and M1 garand training today. Tomorrow her division should be sailing. Pretty impressive first few days.

Parents weekend, Official Naval Reserve Officer swearing in, some New York city adventures and Americana for all you folks. We made sure to take the Staten Island Ferry (free) and see Lady Liberty, the 9/11 memorial (to pay our respects). Had some pizza, some street food, and central park action. Walked about 10 miles overall. Took her out for sushi a couple times. Gave her some encouraging words and dropped her off again today for the next leg of her academic journey. Really proud of this young lady and everything she's working towards.
