What's new

My cherokee build

Early 65 fastback. It's my wife's. It was her mother's first car.

That's awesome. Mine belonged to my dad's best friend. He got it brand new for his 16th birthday. My dad grew up riding in it and making out with ugly chicks in the back seat. I used to harass his friend all the time to sell it to me. It was always "i'm going to restore it." Unfortunately, he died of a sudden heart attack and his daughter didn't want the car so I was able to buy it. We took our 69 Mach 1 off the rotisserie, hung it from the ceiling of the shop, and are about to start replacing quarters on the 66. I wish it was a fastback as that is my favorite. Coupes are kinda meh...

Spent some time today with the buffing wheel on the grill surround. Supposedly it's anodized so this is probably as shiny as I'll get it without a full strip and polish. Which I'm not doing for a camping rig. Either way, mocking it up with the rims/tires convinced me that it's the right grill to use.

I finished polishing the grill and set on to masking it for painting. What a pain in the ass that was. But I'm happy with the end result.

Once that was done I got the support mounted again and mocked up the grill and even tossed the bumper on for giggles.

Then I set in to un-modifying the headlight buckets to get back to stock. And then readjusted the hood.

Then it was on to taillights and getting the license plate light to work. Small battles.

All in all, I'm happy with today's progress.

That grill looks sweet all polished up and detailed. Good choice going with that one.

It's funny, when I was younger you couldn't give me one of the older Cherokee's, I thought they were the ugliest things ever. Now, I'd rock the shit out of one. Fake wood panels and all.

Been working on finalizing ac lines and a bunch of boring stuff like that. Then decided to figure out where to mount my ac controls.

As of right now, I'm thinking in the glove box. This is Texas and it'll likely be on full blast all the time anyway. But I played with putting it where the original ashtray goes. It doesn't match at all but would be convenient. Last option is to make a panel that mounts under the dash.

Are they all electronic? Maybe inside the center console? Hidden, but easily accessible.

It's the 80s man, no center console. Just a center jumpseat. I'll probably hide it in the glove box under the radio. Not very convenient but easy to reverse and keeps the modern controls hidden.

I couldn’t remember if they were bench type or bucket. I know in my CJ7 they are buckets and I made my own center console.

from a use standpoint, I'd prefer it to replace either the ash tray or clock.

Do they have a vintage looking head unit?

I got one headlight bucket modded as part of the conversion to a rhino grill and decided to mock it up. Gotta say I wasn't as blown away as I thought I'd be. So I'm back to trying to polish up the muscle grill. FYI, rhino=narrow grill and the muscle grill is the wide one. I did buy a buffer from HF today after an incident with a power ball in my drill press. Don't do that by the way.

It definitely brought yesterday to a halt. I did get the ac condenser mounted so all wasn't lost.

Interested in your opinions on the two different grills. Pics 1, 2 and 3 are of mine, 4 and 5 are random interwebs pics.

I am a fan of the muscle grille personally. I am loving this build. I wish I had bought a grand Wagga back a few years ago when they weren't ridiculously priced.

Ya I bought the classic auto sounds Hermosa radio. Has all the modern junk, like Bluetooth, but looks old school.

Spent the day building exhaust and will likely never do it again. Just tedious overhead work and all the fit and refit, grind a little then tack and get a dingleberry in your armpit...gets old quick.

Just now seeing this. Great build :smokin: I did this once but chose to bash my hard work into trees in the woods and now I own an orange beer can that looks like it's been crushed ten times. Keep the pics coming

Buddy came over and helped me get the back springs mounted. Oddly they were more work than the front. Still not done but it's sitting on its own weight again.

Thanks guys. Seeing the lift and tires is more inspiration to keep plugging away.
