I don't drive Formula 1 cars, but even if a brake was to "explode", why would both unconnected sides do the same at the same time? Wouldn't the wheels lock up before "exploding"? Surely there has to be a better explanation of what happened.

So the brakes didn't EXPLODE
It did look like the spindle side of the suspension failed. It does surprise me when it happens on both sides at the same time.
