Missing person rubicon

He drank water from the river and found a handful of berries to eat.
I always assumed all our local berries, aside from blackberries, were poisonous.
Is that what he ate, or is there a different edible local berry?

You can get these from tractor supply

I know we got miner's lettuce, blackberries, and a few other edibles out there.
Would actually be nice to have a little guide with pics and such.
It will take 3 weeks minimum to starve. Just focus on finding enough water and stay away from the mushrooms and the berries that taste like burning.

I get that. 3 weeks food, 3 days water, 3 minutes oxygen.
I'm more looking at it from a fun camping angle to go forage in the forest with the kids and be 100% sure it would be safe.

Well, get a copy of "all the rain promises" for mushrooms. Find a wild edibles of California or similar book or pamphlet. Beware of AI reproductions though, do some research on authors and sources.

Mum grew up in Gilroy and would camp on horseback and live off the land for several days at a time as a girl. Prickly pear is the only one I can recall off hand that she mentioned.

Locally we have blackberries in a few different varieties, red and blue huckleberries, blueberries, salmon berries, thimble berries, Oregon grape, strawberries, plus all sorts of edible plants from cat tails to purslane to bladderwrack on the beach.

Edit cause I did more thinking; spruce tips, juniper, wild rose, stinging nettle, dandelion, dock...list goes on man!

There's tons of wild food out there, it's worth learning about.

Well then google what you put in quotes, numbnuts.

Very first result is an article titled "Wild Edibles in the Sierra Nevada Mountains".

Damn. If you were in an area you are familiar with and know you only walked 10-15 minutes to get to your rest spot then leave to return to your starting point, when do you turn around because you figure you went the wrong way? I thought maybe an hour but 5 days is solid commitment. :lmao: Glad the guy is okay.
