Seems gaia is based on ios and sucks for Android users.
Pricing...It seems like onx must give you alot more @$100 annually vs $60?
Specifically looking for Android compatibility.
Gaia techs claim they are working on an Android base subscription for 2 years now...
Whatcha got?

I use Onx mainly because when I first seen Gaia I see it pronounced as Gaya and I don't want to be 🏳️‍🌈

Also does Gaia give land boundaries or ownership like OnX, cause that's a big thing if you're not in the West.

I use Gaia, but reason only because I found it before OnX really started being popular. It does seems more tailored and marketed to the non-motorized crowd. My wheeling buddies all use OnX. Can’t say their is a difference in features, but OnX is more visually appealing.

Did Gaia ever fix itself so it won't show hiking trails? I tried it a few trips a few years ago and I hated it cause all my routes were impossible because they ended up involving hiking routes.

I ended up getting the garmen overlander, (50% off) and its pretty good except sometimes it won't let me put in certain numbers for coordinates. Some numbers on the pad will be grayed put and unselectable. Can be particularly infuriating when a friend gets to an area first, sends you coordinates of where they found a spot, and the gps won't let you enter them in

OnX just seems to work for dummies like me.

The extra info for the trail is pretty sweet when you didn't really plan your day, like was mentioned.

Alternatively in CO at least the CO-Trex app is pretty damn good, obviously only works for CO but maybe other states have similar.

i have both. no current sub for either at the minute. but did have at one time. onX loved because i felt it had more support by off roaders loading trails and such. Gaia i feel is pretty cool and felt like it was awesome for offroading with your feet (hiking) but just dont think i would ever get a sub for it again. onx or avenza or maprika seem to have more maps loaded for parks around the mid west. just my impressions though. i do think it is pretty cool that you can load historic maps in gaia from 100 years earlier kinda cool

I found that you have to make a manual selection of 4x4, else it falls back to hiking.
I'm not smart enough to enter coordinates and import stuff:laughing:
Just not liking the fact that ifone guys can do shit I can't standing side by side..

Same, was using Gaia before OnX existed.

Then OnX came out and it really sucked.

Now OnX is pretty good, but I'm so used to Gaia.

I've tried OnX a few time to see if I'd like it better. It's definitely improving over the years, but I still prefer Gaia.

I think OnX is best if you want to just open and app and it's loaded with trails.

I think Gaia is better if you're nerding out and planning routes on your PC and then loading them onto your tablet.

This is all IOS experiance, but IIRC my buddy is running Gaia on a android based head unit in his Tacoma with good results.

It took a bit, but Gaia has worked well for tracking for me.

Tried OnX, tracking was slow/glitchy, and worst of all would not point forward. Constantly about 30 degrees to the right. Multiple vehicles, multiple devices, multiple orientations, no change.

But I almost never create a route, I’m scanning satellite view while cruising looking for new/random offshoots.

I use Gaia on Android. It works fine. The premium satellite with topo overlay map is great for finding camping spots etc.

My main gripe is that working the UI can be a bit of a pain while driving.

I tried OnX once, but it was utterly useless in Europe. All of the fancy features only exist for the US.

Got Gaia during some sale for a year subscription and ended up forgetting to cancel the renewal so I have it for another year. I do like that if you do a little bit of legwork pre trip on pc or on the phone you can get things pretty dialed in.

The tracking is great and downloading areas before headed out on backpacking trips makes cross country travel a breeze and limits getting turned around in the woods. Not so big of a deal in a 4x4 when staying on trail tho.

Not sure about OnX but Gaia also has a layer you can add that displays recent satellite imagery. I can’t remember the exact refresh rate for the satellite constellation used but it’s basically a weekly refresh. Helps in the spring checking approx. snow levels before headed out.

That would be handy, didn’t know that one, I’ll have to check it out.

I use Gaia as it was better before Onyx got big and popular. Do alot of route planning on a PC for trail runs. I'm trying to overlay the FS maps in it though and that's been taking some time to setup. Onyx isn't 100% accurate for the trails that are in the app and they don't seem interested in fixing the trail information's or working with Locals.

Also use Alpine Quest

I just double checked how often they update and it says at least every 2 weeks. There’s two layers. Fresh Sat Recent and Fresh Sat Cloud Free. Obviously recent is great but if the area was super cloudy when the satellite passed over you’re out of luck. Cloud free filters the imagery so it may not be as up to date. Date stamps show up on the layer so you can see when the image was taken. Like I said, killer feature for those early/late winter hikes/trips.

I use Gaia on my Android and it's fine. I'm not building routes, but if I download the area where I'm going to be I can not get lost.
The sat images are cool, but I actually prefer the USFS one with elevation overlay.
