I rented a car from Avis, to be dropped off at different location, a building at a small airport in Long Island (Gabreski airport).

I found the building, walked in and asked the people at the front desk if that was the return point for Avis. They said yes, so I gave them the keys.

Asked for a receipt and they said that once Avis had the car in their system, they would email me a receipt. I called an Uber and left. I took a photo of the car at their parking lot.

Five days later I get an email from the Avis loss prevention department saying that they don't have the car. Avis tells me that hey have called that location and they don't have the car.

How #$%@# up am I? I didn't buy their insurance, but my CC (Chase Freedom) supposedly covers collision and theft. I assume all rental cars have transponders these days?

Thanks.

Did Avis specify the drop off location? Someone missed a scan somewhere and they're checking to make sure you dropped it off before actually looking for it. Plus it's an airport, it's all on video.

Yes, it went exactly where they specified.

Not fucked at all, probably.

I spent the extra money to rent through hertz rather than budget/avis. Similar story. Rent3d car, dropped off at another location. Drop off had no kiosk, no people, construction sign said "return all brand car rental here" so I did.

Then went direct to a camping trip with no cell service. Once I got back to cell service, got a call from hertz loss prevention. Called them back, said what I did, said I had my gate receipt when I left with the other car. Gal on the phone corrected all my charges

Sometimes it's worth the extra $20  none of their insurance

Did they at least make it right for you or did you end up having to dispute it via your card?

I keep getting automated emails saying the car hasn't been returned.

I already communicated last week with the loss prevention people and told them what I said here and shared the photo and timeline.

Are they still charging you? If they haven't closed the tab yet after you talked to them, probably dispute with card time.

A coworker had the same issue. They have GPS. They’re just fucking you over until you yell loud enough. You flew home, obviously you don’t have the car. Fuck them not giving a receipt though. You should have insisted.

What happened in his case?
