Look twice motorcycles are everywhere

What's the chance he was exceeding the speed limit? Seems like plenty of time to see the car in the way and stop if he was. If not, then it's at least partially his fault. Everyone thinks speeding isn't a big deal, but physics is a bitch.
Exactly. I had a road glide as a loaner and all that tech was an absolute distraction... i did not like and will now never buy. Wouldn't surpr8se me if rider had cruise set and was fuck8ng w8ith the radio/gps/menus, and got distracted...

I don’t think he used the front brake, just locked up the rear. I hate to say it but I think that bike could have stopped in time.

Didn't read the whole thread, but fuck motorcycle riders. It's your choice to ride, it's your choice to be in something that makes a minor fender bender a death sentence. You may as well not wear a helmet either. I've scraped so many fucking motorcycle riders off the pavement I don't care anymore. You chose to do this, accept the consequences. :flipoff2:

a few years ago, I was already on the fence riding on the street anymore. This pretty much sealed the deal. I very rarely ride the street anymore now. all track is it for me. I don’t know how I survived, much less walked away without a scratch. People just don’t pay attention.

Just rural rides for me anymore too many idiots glued to their phones without consequences for me to be putting around with the plugged in clowns in metropolises. Drink a beer and kill and it’s life in prison for vehicular manslaughter, check your feed and mow down a guy on a bike down and it’s a slap on wrist, not thanks..

Like some others I ride with my head on a swivel.
Try to adjust my place on the road based on what is around me, and have an escape route.

When in city I give cars tons of space, if behind inattentive driver I try to pass when safe to do so.

On freeway like some others I like to put distance so none are next to me, then back it down closer to speed limit. Typically I am in 5th gear, sometimes 4th so I have plenty of instant passing power. In city 3rd gear mostly until traffic clears up around me/I leave them behind then an upshift.

Splitting lanes seldom do I commit to, too many cell phones/other distractions. I see it daily as I am commuting between work sites. Hell they don’t see my white van with red ladders on top of it.

hard to see in the video, but it doesn't look like there was any fork dive
yes, this guy could have rode away

.....but he had his loud pipes

Fuckin grass clippings

Had a Honda Ruckus for a little while when I was 19. That thing was a blast and would do 45 with my fat ass as a 12 pack under the seat no problem.

Going down a road by the river one day on it and come around the corner and hit a big wet pile of monkey grass clippings some asshole homeowner just dumped square in the middle of the road on the outside of a turn where you couldn't possibly see them ahead of time.

Only thing that saved my ass is how light that scooter was. Ended up fish tailing like a motherfucker but was able to plant my boots and hold the front end straight and just slide it out while the ass end of the scooter calmed down. Scary as hell in the moment, but had to have looked cool.

I've always wondered why some MFG doesn't make a left-side discharge mower... When I cut near our county road, there's no way in hell I want my back to oncoming traffic... which can sometimes mean clippings in the road.

They have to be in the northern hemisphere. Left discharge won't work properly because coriolis effect. :flipoff2:

they were just impatient to get into the already full center (it appears they tried going to the left of the blue pickup that was also turning left).

Car was totally at fault not only for pulling out, but for having nowhere to go. There was other traffic besides the motorcycle and the idiot driver just expected them to stop for him/her blocking the lane.

I ride a lot less these days because of all the phone idiots. Too many people not paying attention out there. I've also had some close calls with riders when I'm in a cage - they fly up through traffic and you have no idea they're even coming before they're beside you.

I will say that I must check my mirrors, much, much more often than the average driver. I have yet to be "surprised" by a motorcycle flying past me; I've always identified them in my mirrors as they are weaving their way through traffic behind me. I have noticed how much they terrify some of the other drivers that aren't paying as much attention. I watched an older lady almost swerve into a truck to avoid a motorcycle that had flown by her and cut in front of her, less than a foot from her front bumper; the sad thing is the bike was already car lengths ahead of her before she even reacted.

Speaking of people who have no idea what's happening around them, I had a car that apparently tried to go around me on the right today as I was moving to the right.
They were in the left lane and had been pacing me but a few cars back for a couple miles while I was in the right lane, I moved to the left lane to make room for a vehicle merging at the on-ramp then went to move back over, they changed from the left lane to the right lane and started trying to go around me on the right between when I checked my mirror (and saw them behind me in the left lane) and when I started moving over, all the while with my right turn signal on.
I was in the F350, so not exactly a small or easy to miss vehicle, no idea why they thought that was a good idea.
After I finished changing lanes into the right lane they scooted back into the left lane and went around me.
I just shook my head, set the cruise at 5 over and watched them go by at 15 over heading into the stretch where the state police frequently run speed traps.

A combination of heavy traffic around here and a K2500 with a cap on the back, so I admit that there are blind spots behind me.

Yea, I've definitely had bikes or small cars even change lanes/sneak into a blind spot, but the speedsters you can spot a mile back in the mirror with their radical lane-changing ways; they tend to move through blind spots so quick, it doesn't matter.

The ones that drive me nuts are the ones that will change lanes into a blind spot and then just ride there.

I had an old lady slowly merge into my lane and push me into the shoulder beside a jersey barrier. I knocked on her window and she still didn't see me.

fuck that. not legal where I am, but even it were no way. I see people lane splitting at like 40mph. no way. I stop and angle my bike towards the edge of the road. never get myself right behind the car so when someone is texting and driving, I can drop the clutch and get off the road before they smash the vehicle in front of me.
Lane splitting is about the safest place to be.

Yes, helmet laws are dumb

Sucks for rider. That's enough distance to avoid head on crash imo.

Riders or drivers. Shitty people behind the wheel regardless.

Stupid driver or rider. Hate them both equally.

Came across similar situation both riding and driving, but paying attention and prepare for evasive action makes world of difference.

I just wish I has 2nd right arm to flip while taking evasive action to avoid collision. Easy in the truck but they dont always see it.

I agree. Easy to lane splitting in CA anytime than riding in Phoenix and surrounding during rush hour. Glad they added lane filtering law in AZ.

After seeing this thread pop up over and over, I finally decided to click.
All this time I didn't think it applied to me because I've never heard of a "look twice motorcycle".

yea the Harley isn't the best ride on the freeway. not all that nimble.

the gsxf is much better and I do about the same as you. just focus on getting away from vehicles. different style of riding for sure.
Wrong. I have to argue that it's one of the best cruiser bikes out there. I'm fond of the FLH chassis. I can lay the footboards into the pavement at any speed I want, and avoid whatever obstacle that presents itself.

The rider in this video lacked the skill, confidence and practice to avoid his obstacle. He was going to fast for the intersection, recognized the threat too late, locked the rear tire, fixated on the target, and hit it.

I don’t think he used the front brake, just locked up the rear. I hate to say it but I think that bike could have stopped in time.
Feel sorry for the guy for sure either way, but when first watching the vids that's the conclusion I came up with also. Wondered why no one else said it until I read your post.

There's a lot of riders who are scared of the front brake, and don't use it anywhere near enough. Even with ABS lots don't use that right lever enough.
Of course the old time racers and such always have the front brake dialled in. Commuters not so much.

I love the Beringer 6 pot front on my supermoto more than anything.

To some (probably most) this might sound really stupid, but I often have the plan B of pushing up off the pegs and over a car if hitting is imminent. The older I get the more I don't trust my reflexes and leg strength to time it right though :lmao:
Rather a high-side type crash landing scenario, than being stopped instantly by a solid object like that.

You only shy the front brake on a tight turn. Otherwise, the front is where all the braking is. That's why it's such a big brake compared to the tiny rear. You'd think this is common sense.

Getting above the crash is actually a very smart idea. My bike crash at age 17 or 18 had me hit the rear trunk of an old man's car and I flew over it rather than into it. I'm certain it spared me additional damage.

I pass on double yellows if I can. When the guy in front of me is floating between the centerline and the shoulder, I can see the phone screen in their right hand, constantly braking, I zip by them to get as far away as possible.
It's legal to pass on double yellow in Vermont.

My streetbike will run circles around a Harley. I'm talking off ramps at 70mph without a thought. The handling isn't even in the same category. The braking, the top speed, the acceleration. Take off, sure, I guess the Harley will come out on top. Even then I'm hesitant. Like comparing a U4 to a deuce and a half.
