Are there any alternatives to the Dakota Alert MURS system? I've used four of them for years and now it's time to replace them. They use the Multi Use Radio Service at 151-154 MHz and advertise a four-mile range which translates to a little less than one mile in my heavily treed area when new. Their systems are pretty basic and have not evolved in at least 18 years. Several things should be improved but they are apparently content with selling the same old stuff, flaws and all.

I bought one new transmitter to evaluate. The old 1/4 wave telescoping antenna had a BNC connection, both of which are not ideal for outdoor use. They now use a short rubber ducky one with an SMA connection. It is more weather proof but the range has been reduced by well over half. The male voice alert has been replaced with a weak female voice that's harder to hear. The outdoor enclosure box is pretty chintzy as well.

I ordered a proper 1/4 wave whip antenna with the SMA connection so I'll see how that works. They could make it so much better but I suspect they have no competition and don't feel the need.

Well sure, but have you seen what they do to your road? As far as I can tell they are the only ones to make a detector with a range beyond 1500 feet and they need some competition.

Yeah they are a bit tough on the pavement. Honestly I had no idea that these things were even a thing. Neat idea and you're right, dakota sure seems like they're the only source for them.

Is the direction of the receiver static or dynamic? You can build a simple 2 meter Yagi antenna and aim it at the receiver for those on the MURS system

The direction is static. I will look into that.

I own the same system. My last attempt to try and upgrade/date it found nothing., granted it was a year ago. I've come to the conclusion that Dakota realizes there isn't much if any competition for the market.
