Well I have a fuck ton and a half of trees I need to buck and split.

Co-Worker has a kinetic he swears by, definitely fast. Hydro has more power, but is slow to retract. I am seeing 2 way hydro that seems like it mitigates that issue a bit.

I don't have a skid steer or tractor to power it.

Other things.
6 way blade?
Log loader?
Outfeed table seems super handy but I can prob add that easy.

GO :flipoff2:

I like having mine flipped like this and sitting on a milk crate while I split.

I have an American with a 36" throw. I built a slip on 4-way the reverses the cutting direction and shortens it to a 28" throw.
36" for sugarhouse
24" for home.
It goes vert. or horz. and is nice because the top of the I-beam is belly height, so no sore back. Just set the tractor bucket same as working height.

We have this Champion "34 Ton" (grain of salt taken):

Splitting ~40" oak rounds was a pain in the back, but the vertical splitting option made it possible.

Powered retract w/ detent is great: finish a split, throw handle back, grab next log.

I have no complaints so far, would buy same unit again.

so what is a fuck ton of trees?

what size are they?

what type are they?

need those answers to make best recommendations.

otherwise you need this one
2.8 cycle time

start at 7:00 to see it split

I had two more 110'+ 24" come down...... have at least 4x more than that.

Mostly fir/pine. Some cotton wood as well. No real hard wood.

I was looking at this .....

EDIT: That thing is fucking awesome, but probably $$$$$$$

Well so far single throw hydro is winning.... Anyone use a double throw?

Those are well designed.

Must be running around 50 gpm pump.

Takes me about 2.5-3 hrs to do a cord of wood with my processor. Not racing though, that's busted up, everything hurts and i don't like to sweat speed. 🤣

That's loading logs, processing and stacking.
Processing is about an hour.

Best I ever did was 2 cords ready to deliver in 2 hours with another guy stacking.

I have a teenage daughter..... :lmao:
Perfect. Let her and her boyfriend use the cabin as long as the wood pile grows faster than it get used.

He’s gonna fuck her all over everything regardless so you might as well harness that. :flipoff2:

Ya.......No offense, but you definitely aren't setting the world on fire using a processor and pulling 2.5-3 cords per hour.

If I'm just splitting, I can do a cord an hour on my splitter.

He's doing 3 other jobs simultaneously.

My vote is something cheap, I can't move big pieces of firewood around on a double action one. We got one on trade for 4 new tires.

I will be honest, a cord an hour is pushing it on a splitter for 1 person.

I figure about 1.5 for a cord, I also have a 4-way wedge on mine.

I do not think cycle speed is going to be that important. as long as it is reasonable.
would definitely want single throw.
you will lose a lot of splitting force on the return stroke of the cylinder. I can see logs getting stuck much more often with that design.
I would also want a taller wedge than that offers. the one you listed looks to be about 6"
will make splitting 24" rounds a lot harder. I think mine is about 12" tall.

dont get hung up on what the ton rating of units are either.
most of them are bullshit ratings
I see 37 and 42 ton ratings.
they have the same 5" cylinder that mine does.
most systems with have a relive valve set about 2250 psi
that equals about 22 tons on a 5" cylinder, 14 tons on a 4" one

Not too worried about time. I don't heat with it, just like a good fire, and am planning a sauna soon. And have a bunch of rounds already stacked...... But I also dont want to waste time either, if I can work at a moderate pace and get 2x done in the time it would have taken to get 1x done with a different machine for a couple hundred less I will spend the $$.

I assumed all the ratings are bullshit.

Taller knife sounds like a good ideal. Most of line are 12-18" but I do have a 44" tree at the stump I need to buck up.
