I've picked up a Grizzly locker for my Dana 60. The axle has 4.10s. right now and I want to keep them. My locker is a 4.10 and down carrier. My limited understanding of setting up gears tells me I can take the carrier out of my axle, put the ring gear on the locker, put the shims on the new carrier with new bearings (if I don't want to reuse the ones on the factory carrier) and drop the locker in without needing to set backlash. Is that correct? I keep reading about setting up used gears, and it seems like the only write ups I see about lockers and gears are people who re-gear. I just want to install a locker and it makes sense to me to be able to reuse the shim stacks and have the proper backlash/pinion depth/bearing preload/etc. just by installing everything to factory torque specs.

You typically will not have to touch the pinion. I've had mixed results reusing the shims for backlash. You definitely need to check backlash. Sometimes it'll be dead on, sometimes you have to change some shim heights. You should always run a pattern after doing any sort messing around in there.

You'll still want to measure backlash and check the pattern used gears or not. The original shims are a good place to start but they're not always right on a new carrier.

So "check it since you're in there. It's not that hard to do" kind of install.
