Thinking about turning my Sami into a fully independent sxs. Back in the day Supra mk2 diff’s were the cat’s meow, now they are old and hardeR to come by. Is there a newer, fairly narrow option, with aftermarket gearing/ locker support?

The ford 8.8 from newer explorers are compact ready to go with the best gear selection I know of next to a 9”.

The 8.8 has spools, detroits, arbs, or any lunch box locker as an option. And ratios go as low as 6.14:1. They have 5.71’s for them as well.

Thinking smaller, I want to do a light weight 4cyl, possibly 6 with boost. Total package sub 3k?

Chop two IFS Toyota front ends and pick your wheelbase

I’ve wanted to do this with 86-95 hitrac since I was 15… even drew it up with a VW body.

If the rear gears and caster could be figured out, it could be cool

Just flip the “rear” IFS diff and mid engine it.
Cab forward and a box bed.
Like a Kubota RTV on steroids 😎🍆

6th Gen Camaro, has an oil cooler, with 7th Gen Vette suspension and shafts.

You want the R180. It's a Nissan diff used in a whole lotta import shit but Subaru used them by the millions. Gears from mid 3s down to the high 4s are available as are lunchbox lockers, clutch limited slips and gear limited slips.

I had the same idea after watching a SxS on the trail go by at 25mph while I was trying not to flop over going 5mph.

A cheap option might be the 3rd gen mitsu montero - I think the front is 8" and rear 9.5" with an air locker option. Not 100% sure about available ratios and lockers, but the CVs are supposed to be very stout.

I promise you that's not from IRS/IFS.

You can make a solid axle rig move just fine with a good suspensions setup.

Agreed, I just thought it would be cool to figure out a fairly simple/'cheap'/plentiful IFS/IRS to bomb around with. Getting a beater sami on leafs to soak it up like that would probably involve fairly expensive shocks and bumps.

Because IFS / IRS would involve cheap shocks ?

My original plan was to shed weight and downsize tires and keep the zuk axles, then run good shocks/ bumps.

R180 with ARB's is the ticket. I know of a SXS running them front and rear, too wide for me...

Probably cheaper to buy custom leafs, shocks, and air bumps. Less work too. Throw some 32” SxS tires on and go rally

Depending on the weight, would be pretty easy to buy take off SxS shocks. Even the factory setups on alot of these machines are pretty good with lots of adjust-ability and can be had for cheap.

You should buy a SXS then

Link the Zook axles and buy good shocks and you'll be where you want to be at a fraction of the cost/effort. I have no issues keeping up with my sxs buddies on trail rides in the cherokar with long arms, and Fox 2.0s.

Or do a TTB setup, just because they are cool. But no matter what you build good shocks/coilovers are gonna be required if you want it to soak up the terrain
