What's new

Java's F450 RV

That seems really black for a fuel filter at any mileage. Not sure on the 6.4 but when we had those symptoms on our C6.6 engines the common rail pump lube oil was leaking into the fuel side of the pump and the return fuel would black the filters out. The 6.4 is old enough to have a oil lubricated injection pump unlike the newer all fuel lubed pumps. No idea though about the 6.4 specifically.

Googling I see mention of Asphaltate but I have associated asphaltates with nasty sludge and black filters, get's misdiagnosed as algae often.
If it's asphaltate build up I sugest you ttreat it pretty quick and get spare fuel filters if you don't have them already.

That's a good idea. I think the 6.0 and 6.4 are similar in that they have HPOP to actuate the injectors. Perhaps one of them is leaking, and putting engine oil into the fuel system, that's returned to the tank, then blacks out the filters? Not even sure if that's possible on a 6.4.

That'd be nuts if that was the case. Buddy of mine with a 7.3 had something happen to him, but it was catastrophic, as in all of his oil was pumped into the engine through the broken injector, vs into the fuel return.

It starts out clear beige, right? Not sure what would cause that other than dirt and silt in the fuel.

Yes beige/orange ish

Hmmm I was thinking maybe algae. I sure hope its not injectors?? IDK if that's even possible on this thing. I believe its fuel lubed tho?

The 6.4 is common rail I believe the 6.0 is HEUI.

The common rail could have the problem, I can't see a way for a HPOP to cause this because the oil and fuel only mix in the injectors.

I don't see injectors being the problem with a CR engine, but I am out of the loop pretty good on 6.4's.
Asphaltates are a big problem for stuff that doesn't run a lot. I had it really bad on my old 7.3 tow rig to the point my filters were clogging and there were huge blobs in the bottom of the tank. Google up some articles on it to compare to your specimens.

Yes its common rail..... Please don't say this could be the issue..... Ugh.

I drive to fuck out of this tho.... Idk. Almost 50k on it now. Usually no more than 2 weeks sitting at most.

Soooo AirDog lift pump/filters. Worth it?

siphon some fuel from the tank to see if it's black with oil? Or full of silt or asphaltines, etc..I'd do that first before I jump to panicking about injectors and whatnot.

I'll do that when I get home. 300 miles no hiccups yet.

Any reason I couldn't pull the filter to inspect and shove it back in if it looks OK?

Not at all, just watch the rings for twisting.
Does the black come off on your fingers like dye or paint maybe? Asphaltates are like that, engine oils won't be I believe.

I'll pull It tomorrow and find out!

Just did fuel and oil. Does this seem crazy black for fuel filter for 10k miles?

I'll just be on the other side and say that's what my fuel filters look like at ~20k, at every other oil change. I dont know what they look like at 10k.

Well that's Good to hear!

The black media isn't concerning its the residue on the bag that caught my attention.

Bag has the oil filter in it also :laughing:the fuel looked 100% normal lol

Well holy shit, disregard all concern LOL. Filter looks fine, dirt = dark but the BLACK oil residue not supposed to be there hahaha.
Carry on camping!

Well lets talk tune and trans tune again....

I get stupid high boost pressures if I romp on it (I try to stay under 40.... But I am sure 50 would be possible). And when I recorded EBP number (A LONG time ago) they were consistently ~20psi higher than boost.

I am wandering if a trans tune would keep it out of OD more and in the higher RPM's it seems to flow more air and keep boost and egt's a bit lower. Shitty tune overall? IDK. Learn me.

How all the fun begins!

Got a little snow over night. Got real cold tho

Did some snow shoeing, lots of sledding.

Ill take that for a cold start win! 12.4F

House batteries were getting low.... They don't like the cold. Alternators were doing 70-90 amps at idle while it warmed up.

Idled down without any drama.

Battery heating pads to keep them warm?

Love the pics.

I just hate the idea of using battery power to heat batteries.... I haven't heated them yet.... It stays ~40 ish under the bed generally. The beer comes out fridge temp

Would be a load for sure, but if you're losing capacity due to the (lack of) heat, would you have more usable capacity if you used 20-50w of power to keep the batteries at 60*?

Maybe? I really don't know how much they would take to warm.

I am showing my lack of thermodynamics but I would think if the Battery compartment was insulated well (XPS Foam, foil tape etc.) then the heat in Watts would be minimal, and could even really be done via the engine on the way to the camp site, or at home via pre-heating from shore power if not just with a duct from the on board heater.

I tried to do some load calculations on this before but I suck at it.

Yeah Maybe not.... They re on 1" of XPS under them, and inside the truck (walls insulated) but no air under the bed means it gets cold. The heater just has one outlet, so not really easy to duct it in. Plus heating under there is just more heat.

Maybe I will see if I can tuck a pad between them, its pretty tight.... But cant hurt to preheat on shore power anyway. Although my new charger temp compensates well.

Went and looked at the data from last weekend. Battery low was 2C (35.6F) with exterior temps ~15
