Is it possible to hook hook an electric Hyd pump to a manual Hyd press?

I got a line on a 20T hydraulic press and I have an electric Hyd pump.

I’m wondering if I could take out the relief screw and plumb in a Hyd line there to make this an electric over oil system.

Any insight?

I don't see why not.

Use a tee so you can keep the relief in the circuit (even when the electric is removed). Also use a valve so you can remove the electric unit and still use the press. Could even use quick connect fittings.

You can, however as I recall those Jacks are usually more in the porta power pressure range than a hydraulic pump pressure range.

This one is just a large bottle jack as far as I can tell.

Yeah but at the 20 ton rating it will probably need 10,000 psi to the back side of the ram. If you do a standard electric pump you will only get 3,000 psi out of most of them. You could always go the air over hydraulic pump route...

Exactly, better off going that route, or getting a air over hydraulic jack for the press.

Might do just that.

Im trying to get pics of the press from the seller to help identify what it is and how it works.

Ive seen it and touched it, but no one at the shop has ever used it, they initially thought it was a one ton press.:homer:

I knew that was wrong as it’s huge, but it has this yellow dome above the cylinder that has me wondering if it is air over oil and they just don’t know.

I’ll post pics when I get them, just currently trying to suss out what I’m willing to pay or if I even will buy it.

Their closing down a small factory that makes crop dusting equipment for helicopters, and have a bunch of stuff I would like to buy. I’m trying to be fair to them so they keep me in mind and give me first dibs before putting stuff on CL.

Got pics.

Doohicky on the top is an oxygen tank.

Jess has an air over hydraulic setup on his press and engine hoist, sweet setup chink freight has them im told.

Is that O2 tank being used as a hydraulic fluid reservoir or something like that?
She sent me some new pics, looks like this might be the case.

Maybe this was done to keep the bottom pump portion of the inverted jack full of fluid so it could pump?

you can use the pump to run basically anything with the right plumbing
you just divert the fluid, the pump doesn't know what it is doing, it just pumps

Probably easier to add a reservoir than taking apart a bottle jack, extending the pickup and getting the chinesium to all reseal itself properly.

Bringing this back up rather than starting a new thread. I have a Ramco 55-ton press with an external reservoir and pump that I'd like to make foot operated to allow me to use both hands to hold work steady on it. I have some press brake tooling that I hope to make something like Swag's setup to use.

I was looking into something like the HF air over hydraulic from above. Any thoughts on if the 10Kpsi would be enough to make this work? That seems to be cheaper than replacing the whole thing.

Should I tee into the existing line as mentioned above? I was originally thinking of just removing the original unit.

My Harbor Freight press must be a copy of that, as it's setup nearly identical. Has an air over hydraulic to that pump though. And the pump is 1 speed.

I would probably tee into it, make sure it's all rated for 10,000# PSI.

Should be enough to make it work.
FTFY.
According to the numbers marked on that gauge, 10,000 pounds is what would be required to get those pressures with those cylinder sizes (8,000psi to get 50 tons with a 4 in bore cylinder, 10,000psi to get 50 tons with a 3.5 in bore cylinder).

Yeah, when looking around, I saw the same. I don't know much about Ramco other than the shop I worked at in the 90s had this press. After I left I kept in touch with the owner, and would help them sort out issues from time to time. When they were closing during the late-00's melt down I picked this up from them.

Cool. I was thinking it would do. I may pick up the HF unit and a fresh longer hose and give it a shot.

Reminds me that I need to come up with a new valve and hose for it. I threw it out recently after finally figuring out what would randomly make the garage smell like roasting skunk ass... ie weed. For years I blamed in on the neighbor smoking it up and it coming into the garage

No idea what would cause it to smell only once in a while, and how it could keep stinking over the years. I bought the press around 2010!

Yes, I did this exact thing to an old Torin (Northern Tool) that I picked up. I rebuilt the cylinder and snagged one of those chineesium amazon pumps that puts out 10k. I have a big gauge so I can watch it and the math on mine works out pretty easy to like 5 tons per 1000 psi on the gauge.
I'll find some pictures. I had my buddy Blake over at Discount Hydraulic spec me out and make a good 10 ksi hose, and am using all steel or SS fittings. I've run the thing up to max on accident once. Scary scenario but no failures. The pump relief kicked in to my surprise.

I'll grab some pics and specs this afternoon.

Here is my setup. I decided to disconnect my air over hydraulic drive and go directly to the single acting cylinder. I bought a few sets of the 10ksi couplers and use those on my setups. I have a mobile style hydraulic hose crimper that came with an air over hydro drive that I removed and have this setup to connect to it easily as well. I'm planning on building a stand alone press brake since all I have right now is my Swag 20T model unit that isn't as wide as my 50T press.

Cylinder adapted to the 10ksi quick fittings like you see on the Enerpac stuff. Yellow thread tape > white teflon.

Gauge was something off of eBay that has a built shock valve. I use this thing with some press brake punches and the impact is hard on a regular gauge without a relief.

WTH is a press brake punch??? This sucker is great. Makes clean holes in plate. Theres some 1/2" slugs from some 1/4" A50 there. I have dies in 3/8" through 7/8" in 1/16" steps. They are ground with a pilot point for lining up with a center punch mark or plasma pierce.

The swag press brake does nice work too. Those holes were not punched but were plasma cut. I need to assemble more frames with each die rather than swapping around between the 3 frames and several die sets.

Ohh and almost forgot... the cheap thrift store desk lamp that I adapted to a welding magnet so I can move it from my press brake to my bead roller, etc.

Finally got around to picking up an air over hydro unit off eBay for $100 including the 6’ hose. Use it to straighten a few blocks with 30 tons of force. Very happy with the upgrade.

My hand pump had a hard time getting past 25 tons and holding it.

Makes me think putting one on the tube bender might be nice.

Got a link for the pump you bought? For $100, I would.lo e to do the same thing.

I have the same press, but in red.

It's on ebay as "Air Hydraulic Foot Pump 10000PSI w 6ft Hose and Spray Gun 3/8"NPT for Car Repair"
